IMPORTANT STEPS WHEN STARTING A NEW BUSINESS!

1) Consult a CPA or EA to determine the best type of company based on your goals.

2) Open a business checking account and use it only for the business. Do not use it for personal purchases. It will save your accountant a lot of time.

3) Before starting your transactions ask your accountant what items can go through your business based on your type of company. It varies.

4) Understanding what can go through your company will save your accountant time and hence save you money.

5) Most importantly, hire a general accountant who understands GAAP. CPA rates for bookkeeping are outrageous and bookkeeper rates are very low but many do not have the GAAP understanding and you will have to pay someone to clean up your files.

6) If you use Quickbooks don’t hire a bookkeeper who says they are Quickbooks Certified but have no accounting experience. That means they understand how to use the software. You need to understand accounting to categorize the items correctly. Make sure they have accounting experience.

At Gogola Accounting Services we only have Accountants on staff and have over 30 yrs of accounting experience. We take pride in our work and consult with CPAs and EAs as needed.

We also offer free consultations.

Most small business owners are concerned with their 'bottom line' of their Profit & Loss statement but the Balance Sheet is a very important statement in determining your business's stability. A Balance Sheet gives you a snapshot of your business' financial condition at a specific moment in time.

It's already the middle of October. Don't wait too much longer to have someone look at your company's books. All small businesses need a qualified accountant to review their books if they only have a bookkeeper on staff. An accountant will charge about half the cost that your tax accountant will charge. Save your money and have an accountant do your accounting, have a tax accountant do your taxes.

When hiring a bookkeeper make sure that he/she knows the accounting software you are using. Don't take their word for it - test them on the software. I picked up a client who had the same bookkeeper for over 10 years. She took for granted that the bookkeeper knew the software. Low and behold the bookkeeper was not reconciling her bank account correctly for 10 years. The system would not let her move on to the next period. She did not know how to use the software so she just checked off items just to be able to reconcile. When I took over, there were items outstanding from 10 years ago that definitely should have been reconciled. Also, she did not know how to close the month. I had to close 10 years month by month. It took a whole day! Bottom line, her cash balance was incorrect month after month, year after year. If you are a small business owner, you have a bookkeeper on staff(not an accountant) and your tax accountant does not review your general ledger regularly, I highly recommend you have a qualified 'accountant' review your general ledger at least quarterly if not semi-annually. I say an 'accountant' because they are about 1/3rd the price that your tax accountant would charge you to do the same thing.
