How a Government Shutdown Impacts Taxes
A shutdown sounds dramatic, but for most taxpayers it does not mean refunds stop.

✅ What still happens
The Internal Revenue Service still accepts tax returns

E-filed returns are still processed
Most refunds (especially direct deposit) still go out

⚠️ What can slow down
Calling the IRS for help (longer hold times or limited staff)
Paper returns
Mailed notices and responses
Identity verification and other manual reviews

💡 Smart moves during a shutdown
File electronically
Choose direct deposit
Double-check dependents, credits, and bank info to avoid delays
Respond quickly to any IRS letters
Bottom line
A government shutdown doesn’t automatically freeze your refund — but anything that requires a human to manually handle your file can take longer.

Refunds are still moving 💸
But some returns may say “processing…” a little longer than usual.
Don’t panic. Don’t re-file. Don’t call the IRS 47 times 😭
Just make sure your info was correct and let the system do its thing.
Patience = money on the way.

📣📣📣 Seeing “still processing” on your tax refund status? You’re not alone.
Even when everything is filed correctly, some returns are taking longer to move through the system right now. That doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.

Here’s what not to do:
❌ Don’t re-file
❌ Don’t amend unless a professional tells you to
❌ Don’t panic

Here’s what to do:
✔️ Double-check you entered the right bank info
✔️ Watch your mail/email in case the IRS needs ID verification
✔️ Be patient while your return works its way through processing

Most delays are just that — delays, not denials.
Your refund is still doing push-ups in the background 💪💰 Key Solution Tax Service LLC

🚗 Wait… California wants to tax us by the MILE now?!

Most people still don’t know this is being discussed, so here’s the simple version.
Right now, roads are mostly paid for through gas taxes — you pay a little tax every time you fill up. But with more electric cars and fuel-efficient vehicles on the road, the state is collecting less gas tax money.

So lawmakers in California are studying something called a Mileage Tax (also known as a “Road Usage Charge”).

👉 Instead of paying based on how much gas you buy
👉 You’d pay based on how many miles you drive
Yes… literally charging per mile driven.
Nothing is officially in effect yet — it’s still in the study/pilot phase — but here’s why people are paying attention:
⚠️ People who drive long distances (work, school, rural areas) could pay MORE
⚠️ Privacy concerns — some proposals involve tracking mileage through apps or devices
⚠️ It could mean paying this ON TOP OF registration fees and other vehicle costs
Supporters say: “Everyone should pay for the roads they use, including electric vehicles.”
Opponents say: “This is just another tax on working people who have to drive.”
No final rates. No start date yet. But it’s being discussed seriously behind the scenes.

👀 This is one of those policies that affects everyday life — and most people won’t hear about it until it’s already decided.

Stay informed. Driving may not stay “just driving” for long.

🚨 Things Your Tax Preparer SHOULD Be Talking to You About (But Many Don’t)

If your tax appointment is just “send me your W-2,” that’s a problem.

Here are real conversations every preparer should be having with you:

1️⃣ Trump Account Election (Form 4547)
If you have children, your preparer should explain: • What it is
• Who qualifies
• Whether it makes sense for your situation
• That it’s an election — not automatic
No explanation = missed planning opportunity.

2️⃣ Filing Status Strategy
Not just what you filed last year — but: • Head of Household eligibility
• MFJ vs MFS consequences
• What changes if your living situation changed
This alone can swing refunds thousands.

3️⃣ Dependents & Who Should Claim Them
Your preparer should ask: • Where the child lived
• For how many nights
• If Form 8332 is needed
• What credits you actually qualify for
“Y’all can both claim the child” is wrong.

4️⃣ Self-Employment Income & Expenses
Not just totals — but: • What’s deductible
• What’s risky
• What needs documentation
• What raises audit flags
There’s a difference between tax planning and guessing.

5️⃣ Estimated Taxes (If You’re 1099)
If you’re self-employed, your preparer should discuss: • Quarterly payments
• Penalty avoidance
• Whether you underpaid or overpaid
Surprises in April = poor planning.

6️⃣ Credits vs Red Flags
A real preparer explains: • What credits apply
• What doesn’t apply
• What triggers IRS review
• Why bigger isn’t always better
Fast refunds aren’t always safe refunds.

7️⃣ Business Structure (If You Own One)
You should hear questions like: • Is an S-Corp appropriate?
• Are you paying yourself correctly?
• Are you mixing personal & business?
Structure matters — especially long term.

IRS announces first day of 2026 filing season; online tools and resources help with tax filing

IR-2026-02, Jan. 8, 2026

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. This year, several new tax law provisions of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill become effective, which could impact federal taxes, credits and deductions.

Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.

📌 2025 Taxes Will Look Different
New forms.
New deductions.
New reporting rules.
This is not the year to rely on TikTok tax advice.
If you want it done right — work with a professional who stays ahead of the changes.

As the tax season approaches read this!!

🚨 California Taxpayers: Here’s How to Check if Your Tax Professional Is LEGIT

Tax season brings out everybody with a laptop and a Canva logo. Before you hand over your SSN, do this 👇

✅ Step 1: Ask for their credential
In California, a legitimate tax professional should be one of the following:
✔ CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
✔ EA (Enrolled Agent)
✔ Attorney
✔ CRTP (California Registered Tax Preparer)
If they can’t clearly tell you which one they are — 🚩.

🔍 Step 2: VERIFY — don’t just believe
Real professionals can be checked publicly.
🔹 CPA → Verify with the CA Board of Accountancy
🔹 EA → Verify with the IRS (Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers)
🔹 CRTP → Verify with CTEC (California Tax Education Council)
🔹 Attorney → Verify with the State Bar of California
If they say “I don’t have a number” or “you don’t need all that” — you do.

🧾 Step 3: They should have a PTIN
Anyone preparing taxes for pay must have a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number).
No PTIN = not legal. Period.

⚠️ Red flags to watch for
🚩 Guarantees of refunds
🚩 Cash-only, no receipts
🚩 Won’t sign the return
🚩 Uses their own bank account
🚩 Says “certified” but can’t explain how
🚩 Can’t explain fees in writing
Professionals explain. Hustlers rush.

🧠 Pro tip
“Certified” is not a vibe — it’s a credential.
If they can’t prove it, it doesn’t exist.
Protect your money. Protect your future.
A bad tax return costs more than a good tax professional.

Education over embarrassment. Always
