Hello friends and clients! Just as we did last year around this time, we have had to come to the unfortunate (perhaps fortunate for us) conclusion that we are no longer able to take on new clients until after April 15th. New clients may still drop off papers if they are okay with waiting until after 4/15. Regular clients and those who were new to us last year are still welcome to make appointments or drop off their papers and we will take care of them before the April 15th deadline. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello friends and clients! The IRS announced today that this year's e-filing season will begin on Monday, January 27th. Those participating in the free-file program can already file but if using a paid service such as us, it's the 27th. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon!

I would like to add a 5th thing: Consult with your return preparer if you have one. Often times we can offer insight into what the letter is saying, or at the very least verify that the letter is legit and you're doing the right thing.

There are four things you should do when you get a letter from the IRS:

1. Read it
2. Respond to it
3. Pay what you can
4. Keep a copy

Do the little things in life, such as bright colors on your tax return folders, excite you? We are thrilled to have these colors for your returns after many years of only pastels. Thanks to Chenango Union Printing for making our wishes come true 😍🤣.

Please save these letters if you receive them, they will be useful when filing your return!

A few reminders and an update:

The federal tax deadline for individuals has been extended to May 17th, and the same is true for NYS as well.

If you had unemployment benefits in 2020 and filed before the middle of March, the IRS will automatically adjust your account and issue refunds beginning next month, there is no need to amend your return.

If you filed your return before the end of last week and had to pay back some excess Advanced Premium Tax Credit, the IRS will also automatically adjust your account and send you a refund. There is not yet word we have seen as to when this would happen, but chances are this will begin in May or June.

And lastly, this has been the craziest, most abnormal filing season in my whole 15 years in this business on several different fronts, but we're getting there and appreciate your patience. We still have appointments available through the extended deadline but will reduce our hours slightly after April 15th. We fully anticipate our massive pile of dropped off returns to be caught up within the next couple of weeks as well. Once again, thank you for your patience, and to returning clients, for your loyalty as well.

Great news, New York State has also extended the filing and payment deadline to May 17! As with the IRS, the first round of estimated payments are still due on April 15.

We also finally got the software update today to accommodate the unemployment changes enacted last week. If you were on unemployment in 2020 and we already did your tax return this year, we will be contacting you over the course of the next week to let you know when to come in and sign the amended return signature page :)

The news we have been waiting for. IRS extends the filing and payment deadline to 5/17. Now let's see if NYS follows suit.

The IRS on Wednesday announced that it is extending the deadline for individuals to file their 2020 tax returns from April 15 to May 17, after lawmakers and tax preparers sought a postponement of the due date.

Dear fellow humans of America, if you were on unemployment benefits in 2020 and have already filed your tax return, you will need to amend it. If you haven't filed it yet, wait. The American Rescue Plan has been signed into law and it includes an exemption (so this makes it tax free) for the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits! There is no guidance from the IRS for this yet and no forms available to accommodate it either. Until there is such a thing, tax returns with unemployment can process, but without the exemption, which would be pointless.

You're welcome. Signed, a really frustrated accountant who really really really hopes they extend the tax season, which currently still has a deadline of April 15th, because insanity. 🤦🤬😭
