With 2023 underway, we have some exciting news to share! During the fall of 2022, we began construction of our new office building located at 2421 South Lamar Boulevard on the corner of South Lamar and Horne Road. We anticipate the completion of the building to be around the end of May 2023.

The building will include the new office space for Kinney and Associates, PLLC, as well as an additional 1,315 sq ft commercial rental space that can be finished based on your needs.

In addition to the commercial space, upstairs the building will have four residential rental units. These residential units will be available for short-term and long-term rental upon completion of the building and include:

1) Two – One bedroom/one-bath units
2) One – Two bedroom/two-bath unit
3) One – Studio Apartment

We are excited to see Cliff grow Kinney Valuation Services. Business valuations are most commonly needed in situations like buying or selling a business, marital dissolution, estate tax and planning, and gift tax purposes.

Under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, effective March 11, 2021, congress changed the taxability of unemployment benefits for 2020 for certain taxpayers. If your modified adjusted gross income is less than $150,000, you do not have to pay taxes on unemployment compensation up to $10,200. If you are married, it is $10,200 for each spouse receiving unemployment. Unemployment compensation over the set amount is taxable.

The IRS is in the process of updating forms to implement this change. The IRS hopes to determine a method by which those who have already filed are not required to file amended returns. So, if you have already filed, hold off on the amendment until the IRS gives further guidance. If you have not filed yet, the IRS recommends waiting until they get the changes made, which they hope will be soon.

The Treasury Department and IRS recently postponed the federal income tax filing date for individual returns. The new filing and payment date for these returns is now May 17, 2021. Mississippi will follow the federal filing deadline as well.

The postponement does not apply to other returns or 2021 first-quarter estimates.

Cliff Kinney, partner in Kinney & Associates PLLC, Certified Public Accountants, has launched a new service line — Kinney Valuation Services — to provide accurate business valuations for clients in Mississippi and the broader region.

We are currently looking for a seasonal, part-time office assistant. The position is available ASAP and will run through the end of this year's tax season (typically mid-April). The hours will be Monday through Friday 8:30-2:30.
