Summer may not officially be here yet, but the activities are already in full swing—and some of them can impact your taxes next filing season. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Summer day camp: Costs for day camps may qualify for the Child and Dependent Care Credit.

Marriage: Wedding season is here. If you’ve recently gotten married, be sure to update your name with the Social Security Administration and report any address changes to the IRS, your employer, and the post office.

Seasonal or part-time work: Even if you don’t earn enough to owe taxes, you may still want to file to claim a refund. Side hustles and gig work can also affect your taxes, especially if you receive a Form 1099-K.

Travel: Business travel expenses may be deductible if you’re traveling away from your main place of work. Also, if you sell digital assets to fund a vacation, keep good records—you may receive tax forms reporting that income.

A little awareness now can make tax season much smoother later.

Homeowners may qualify for federal tax credits for energy-efficient upgrades. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit can help offset costs for items like heat pumps, windows, doors, insulation, and more, while the Residential Clean Energy Credit may cover 30% of the cost of solar, wind, geothermal, and battery storage systems.

An offer in compromise is an IRS program that may allow qualified taxpayers to settle their tax debt for less than the full amount owed. The IRS looks at factors like income, expenses, asset equity, and overall ability to pay when deciding whether to approve it.
