Did you know....
According to Colorado law, specifically C.R.S. 12-100-112, it is explicitly illegal for a person to assume or use the title or designation "certified public accountant," the abbreviation "C.P.A.", or any other similar title, designation, words, letters, abbreviation, sign, card, or device that would suggest they are a CPA, unless they hold a current license.
The Colorado State Board of Accountancy strictly regulates the use of the CPA designation and considers any unauthorized use as misrepresentation. This includes any oral or written representation like business cards, resumes, displaying a certificate, or listing yourself as a CPA in directories or online.
Violating these regulations can result in serious legal consequences, according to Masterson Hall. Fraudulent misrepresentation in Colorado can lead to felony or misdemeanor charges, depending on the severity of the offense and the intent to deceive. Civil liabilities may also arise, with victims seeking damages.
Therefore, to be able to legally use the title "CPA" in Colorado, you must first fulfill all the requirements for licensure, which include education, passing the Uniform CPA Examination, passing the AICPA Ethics Exam, and gaining the necessary work experience. Once you have successfully obtained your license, you can then legitimately claim to be a CPA in Colorado.
