Pandemic Payments Now Won't Affect SSI Benefits or Eligibility
Good news for SSI recipients! The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that pandemic-related financial assistance, including COVID-19 relief checks and state unemployment payments, will not count against SSI eligibility.
Previously, the SSA had limited the exclusion to a period of 12 months. After that, if the money was still in an individual’s account and it put them over SSI’s $2,000 asset limit, it could affect their eligibility or benefit payment.
The change came as the result of the SSA determining that pandemic-related financial assistance qualifies as "disaster assistance," thereby excluding it as a countable resource indefinitely.
