Are you the parent or grandparent of an Illinois highschool senior or junior that isn't sure about their college path? You are not alone, and you should sit down and have a discussion about the Trades. We would recommend the fields of Electrician, Pipefitters, or Plumbers specifically. Over the past year, $100's of Billions have been allocated via various stimulus bills to improve infrastructure. Illinois has already received more than $1.7 Billion in funding to replace all lead water pipes in the state. To complete the entire job will require ten times that amount. There will be ample work for decades to come.
At the completion of one's paid apprenticeship you are 3 credit hours short of an associates degree. If you choose to continue on with your full degree you won't be saddled with four years of debt. Finally, Local Unions have some of the strongest retirement benefits available including pensions and healthcare. We have numerous clients from one of the largest Local Pipefitter's Union and their pension continues to be one of the best I have witnessed across any industry. Their pension also happens to be 94% funded (compared to a very large local municipal fire department union funding of 18%).
