🚨 BREAKING: The IRS Is Furloughing Nearly Half Its Workforce Amid Shutdown

As the government shutdown presses on, the Internal Revenue Service has announced that 46% of its employees will be furloughed, leaving just 53.6% (≈ 39,870 staffers) working. 

Most of the furloughs affect call centers, IT, and headquarters staff — essentially the public-facing and support operations that most taxpayers rely on. 

The IRS released a formal decision memo confirming the furlough begins October 8, 2025, placing non-exempt employees in non-pay, non-duty status until further notice.
