The Treasury Department recently announced that they will stop issuing paper checks for Social Security benefits this year. However, they did not provide an exact timeline for the change. The change is being made to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance security.
Anyone still receiving payments via a paper check should contact the Social Security Administration as soon as possible to change their payment information.
The Social Security Administration provides these steps to make the switch:
• Create or sign in to your 'my Social Security account'.
• Enter your bank account information to get your payment as a direct deposit.
• You can request that your financial institution electronically send your direct deposit information to Social Security.
• If you don’t have a bank account, you can receive electronic payments deposited on a prepaid debit card by enrolling in the Direct Express program.
