A key tax change for small business owners to know heading into 2026…
The QBI deduction is now permanent, and starting in 2026, the phase-in range expands from $50,000 to $75,000 for most filers and from $100,000 to $150,000 for joint filers. That wider range could allow more business owners to benefit from the QBI deduction!

Missing the April 15 filing deadline can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t mean all options disappear.
If you are due a refund, there is generally no penalty for filing late, though delays in receiving that refund can still occur. If you owe taxes, penalties and interest may begin accruing, but filing as soon as possible helps limit additional costs. The sooner action is taken, the more options remain available.
Understanding what happens after April 15 helps reduce fear and encourages timely follow-up.

The Treasury is continuing its move away from paper checks for federal tax refunds and payments, which means how refunds are issued is becoming just as important as the return itself.
While returns can still be processed without banking information, refunds may be delayed if direct deposit details are missing or incorrect. In many cases, providing accurate bank information is the fastest and most reliable way to receive a refund.
This shift is intended to reduce fraud, errors, and mailing delays, but it also places more responsibility on taxpayers to ensure their information is correct. Incorrect routing numbers or closed accounts can slow down refunds significantly.
Confirming banking information before filing helps avoid unnecessary delays once the return is complete.

As tax deadlines approach, rushing increases the likelihood of mistakes that can cause delays or follow-up issues.
Common last-minute errors include missing income, incorrect bank information, claiming ineligible dependents, or assuming credits apply without confirming eligibility. These mistakes often result in processing delays or correction notices.
Taking a little extra time to review information before filing can prevent much larger problems later. Accuracy at the finish line is just as important as speed.

Owing taxes can feel stressful, especially for taxpayers who are used to receiving a refund, but owing does not necessarily mean something went wrong.
Balances due can result from income increases, reduced withholding, loss of credits, or changes in filing status. In many cases, the tax calculation itself is accurate — it simply reflects a different financial year.
The most important step is addressing the balance rather than ignoring it. Options may include paying in full, making estimated payments, or exploring payment arrangements when appropriate.
Understanding why a balance exists helps taxpayers respond calmly and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Filing an extension can be a helpful tool when additional time is needed to complete a tax return, but it’s important to understand what an extension actually does.
An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you expect to owe taxes, interest and potential penalties can still apply to unpaid balances after the original due date. Making a payment with the extension can help reduce those costs.
Extensions are often used when documents are missing or additional review is needed. When used correctly, they provide flexibility without increasing risk, but they are not a solution for avoiding payment obligations.
Understanding the purpose of an extension helps taxpayers use it strategically rather than as a last-minute fallback.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is one of the most valuable education-related credits available, but it applies only in specific situations.
The credit is generally available for the first four years of post-secondary education and is based on qualified education expenses such as tuition, required fees, and course materials. Eligibility also depends on income limits and the student’s enrollment status.
Unlike many education benefits, the AOTC is partially refundable, which means it can still provide a benefit even when little or no income tax is owed. Because of this, accuracy matters when reporting expenses and student information.
Understanding how the AOTC works helps families maximize eligible benefits while avoiding errors that could delay processing or reduce the credit.

As the filing deadline approaches, the importance of complete and accurate documentation is significant.
Missing income forms, incomplete records, or unsupported deductions can delay filing or lead to corrections after the return is submitted. Filing without all required information often results in amendments, notices, or delayed refunds.
Late in the season, there is less time to resolve issues, which can create unnecessary stress. Taking the time to gather documentation before filing helps ensure accuracy and reduces the risk of follow-up problems.
Accuracy matters more than speed, especially when deadlines are close.
