You already know something well enough to teach it. Writing it down turns experience into something that keeps working after you stop — and a book outlasts you.

In the planning work I do, Experience is the strand people most want more of and least often get, and the reason almost never turns out to be the budget. It’s that every individual outing has a price tag attached at the moment you’re deciding whether to go.

Thirty dollars to get in, on a Saturday you’re already tired, is enough friction to lose the day. A pass moves the decision upstream. You pay once, in a planning moment, and then every later moment is just a question of whether you feel like going.

A pass is one of the few purchases that’s really a purchase of doing. Museum, state parks, pool, climbing gym, ski hill. Pick the one you’d actually use and buy it in the first third of the season. Money is the tool. A life well-lived is the point.

There’s something you already know about. Not the thing a screening would catch. The knee. The tooth. The one you could point right at. You don’t need a diagnosis to find it, you need an appointment.

Ten minutes. Make the call while this is still the cheap version of the repair. Vitality is one where the distance between knowing and doing is widest.

Most couples don’t lose connection to a crisis. They lose it to a hundred reasonable requests. A kid’s game. A deadline. Someone’s birthday dinner. A favor you’d feel bad declining.

The fix isn’t willpower, it’s making the night unavailable in advance. One night a week that isn’t up for grabs. Worth defending one night on your calendar.

Money is the tool, not the point.

Most planning starts with current spending and projects it forward. That answers a question nobody asked. Price the life you actually want first. Then find out what it takes to get there.

Think about what the standard approach assumes. Take what you spend now, adjust for inflation, run it to ninety. The output is a number that describes your current life, extended.

Nobody ever asked whether the current life was the goal. Run it the other way and the question gets harder, which is the point.

-What does the house cost in the place you’d rather be?
-What does two trips a year instead of one cost?
-What does it cost to work four days instead of five?

Now you have a number that’s attached to something. Sometimes it’s reachable sooner than people expect. Sometimes it isn’t, and that’s worth knowing early, while there’s still time to change the inputs. Money is the tool. A life well-lived is the point.

One year is too short to matter much. Thirty is a place you can’t see from here. Ten sits in the window where real change is possible and the person living it is still recognizably you.

Most people skip the sentence and go straight to the spreadsheet.
So write it down. One sentence about what you want your life to look like in 2036. What’s yours?

Learn to cook and every dinner changes. Learn the language and the country opens up. Learn to fish and water you’ve driven past your whole life becomes somewhere you go.

Not every valuable experience requires a big trip or purchase to be made. It can also just be an hour per week to teach yourself something new, an hour at a time. An hour a day is roughly 365 hours a year. That’s a real skill, from nothing, every single year.

What would you be able to do by this time next year?

Twice a week isn't much but regular strength training may mean the difference between carrying your own bags at seventy or not. Between getting down on the floor with the grandkids and waving from the chair. Between twenty thousand steps through a European city or the view from the hotel lobby.

Strength can compound, be maintained, or expire altogether. Money is the tool. A life well-lived is the point.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed the same group of men — and later their families — for more than eight decades, and the finding that keeps surviving every re-analysis isn't about cholesterol or income. Its that the quality of peoples close relationships tracks with how well they age, physically and mentally.

Nobody decides to end a friendship. Pick a day. The same one every month. Then don't move it. Twelve calls a year isn't much. It can also make the entire difference. Money is the tool, not the point.
