With IRS staffing cuts and growing backlogs expected to slow customer service this filing season, taxpayers can avoid headaches by creating an IRS online account, requesting an Identity Protection PIN, double-checking all tax documents before filing, and e-filing with direct deposit. Tony Frezza adds that an IRS online account is often “a lot quicker than waiting on hold” because it lets you track refunds, make payments, and view notices online.
