Jennifer Ryan Woods provides a map of eleven financial words you should teach your kids, and at what age. According to the article, you should teach your child the word “Savings” as early as age 4, as it is easier for kids to grasp and can have a hugh impact on those who embrace it early. Other important terms include budget, loan, debt, interest, taxes, investment, stock and credit score.
If there’s one subject that has the ability to impact kids throughout their entire lives its personal finance. Unfortunately, it’s a subject that no one wants to teach them. The practicality of teaching finance to kids is so important it’s the one topic they will actually use for the rest of their lives, every day. But it’s the one topic that isn’t really taught, because most schools aren’t teaching finance, the responsibility fall to parents. But, many parents are reluctant to approach the subject, often because they don’t feel qualified or they think talking about money will make their children worry. In a recent study 72% of parents reported some reluctance talking to their kids about finance. But that doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk to their kids. 91% believe it’s appropriate for kids to learn about financial matters in school and 75% said they should be a personal financial requirement to graduate.
