過完六月，七月四日全國即將歡度我們國家第247個生日，以傳承了近兩個半世紀的方式普天同慶獨立紀念日。開國元勳及第二任總統John Adams在1776年寫給妻子Abigail的一封信裡睿智地預言：「這一天當以盛大遊行、表演、遊戲、運動、鳴槍、響鐘、營火晚會和煙火照明莊重地慶祝，從大陸的一端到另一端，從此時直到永遠。」

但是令人好奇的是John Adams在信中提到的，即將成為「美國歷史上最值得紀念的里程碑」的「這一天」是七月二日，而非七月四日。原來是因為大陸會議的確是在七月二日投票通過了獨立宣言，但是當時南方各州對於奴隸制度仍有爭議，會議代表在接下來的兩天就宣言內容辯論修正，最終定稿時，宣言上標示的正式日期成為今天我們所慶祝的七月四日。

John Adams或許對於慶祝獨立紀念日的日期有不同的見解，但是他說得沒錯，所有國人都應該「從此時直到永遠」地謹記並發揚獨立宣言的精神，尤其是宣言那鏗鏘有力的序文：「我們深信以下這些神聖與不證自明的真理：人人生而平等，造物主賦予他們若干不可剝奪的權利，包括生命權、自由權和追求幸福的權利」。
