What will you do in retirement?

It’s a question that is the focus of my work as a financial advisor. That’s why I am constantly researching and gathering stories of others. Here is one that I love:
Have you ever heard of the Cycling Without Age movement?
It’s a movement that started in Copenhagen in 2012. The idea was that as folks got older, though they may have ridden a bike their whole lives, they were suddenly not as mobile. Why not help them experience the thrill of riding a bike without having to do the work?
So, they created the Trishaws (now nearly 5,000 are out there in the world). These bikes put a safe and comfortable seat in front of the bike. A “pilot” will then bike them around the city. While the purpose is to get out and enjoy a bike ride, the companionship and stories shared are why so many pilots love the work - and why there are nearly 40,000 trained pilots worldwide.
Now, you may be saying, I am not even close to the level of needing someone to bike me around. Great! Be a pilot. The oldest pilot is 90 years old and lives in Denmark.

So, are you looking for something to do in retirement? Maybe helping someone who is less mobile enjoy a bike ride could be the ticket. https://cyclingwithoutage.org/

You’ve probably heard that writing down your goals boosts your chances of success. But have you tried doing it the S.M.A.R.T. way?

Here’s how:
💡 Specific – Get crystal clear! Instead of saying, “I want to save more money,” say: “I want to save for retirement.”
💡 Measurable – Put a number on it! “I’ll save $1,000 a month for retirement.”
💡 Actionable – Map out the steps! “I’ll set up a direct deposit to automatically transfer $1,000 into my retirement account.”
💡 Realistic – Be ambitious but practical. Believe in your ability to achieve it.
💡 Time-bound – Set a deadline! “I’ll save $12,000 for retirement within the next 12 months.”

Pro Tip! Display your goals where you’ll see them daily—it’s a constant reminder to stay motivated and focused.

By setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, you’re not just planning—you’re paving the way to success.

As all our thoughts are turning to taxes for the year, I thought I’d give you a list of some creative deductions business owners should be looking for, but often don’t.

First, look at your online spending. Do you run ads on Facebook, Instagram or other social media platforms? What about any Search Engine Ads? Did you run any sponsored articles or sponsor any podcasts? Those are all online expenses that can fit the IRS’s standard of “helpful and appropriate” business expenses.

Second, what about your software expenses? Do you use online cloud storage? Video conferencing tools or online payment processing? Are you paying for a LinkedIn Premium plan or other subscription packages? All things you can itemize for deductions.

Third, what about travel for conferences? To qualify as a business cost your travel must be away for at least a full day’s work. The travel also can’t be too lavish or extravagant or for personal purposes. That said, you could write off hotel or lodging expenses, shipping of business materials for the work, airplane tickets, rental cars, and more.

Fourth, what about insurance costs? You can write off any insurance premiums that are deemed necessary for your business. Corporate vehicle, key man, malpractice, disaster, etc., could all be deducted.

There are many other things you could look at, but hopefully this gives you some thoughts to take to your tax specialist.

As always, if you have questions about your overall financial strategies, please give our team a call!
