Recently, we had the opportunity to present our financial literacy programs to students in the Upward Bound Program at St. John's University, held at Long Island City High School in Astoria, Queens. The students utilized this opportunity to explore setting savings goals as they participate in the Summer Youth Employment Program and prepare for college in the fall. I am extremely proud of the class of 2026 🎓. Many of these students lack access to banking services, so I provided information on opening savings accounts with a minimal initial deposit of $5 at various financial institutions. You may not be aware that the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection introduced the In-School Banking Program in November 2025 as part of the Financial Literacy for Youth Initiative. According to their website, students who have access to savings accounts are seven times more likely to attend college and exhibit improved financial capability.
