MSG was proud to sponsor and attend Monday's Judges & Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert Annual Awards Dinner, honoring the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer of Royal Bank of Canada and Zachary W. Carter.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, affecting roughly 1 in 8 women over the course of their lifetime. Yet when caught in the early stages, the five-year survival rate is nearly 99%.
Early detection begins with education. Women are encouraged to perform monthly self-exams to recognize changes early. Warning signs to watch for include:
-A new lump or mass in the breast or underarm
-Dimpling, puckering, or thickening of the skin
-Discharge, inversion, or unusual changes
-Unexplained swelling or warmth
-Persistent pain in one area of the breast
Doctors recommend that women of average risk begin annual mammograms at age 40, yet millions of women across the country never receive that screening. For women in underserved communities, access to mammograms is far from guaranteed. Cost and lack of insurance create barriers that turn a preventable tragedy into a devastating one.
Early-stage breast cancer is largely treatable. Late-stage breast cancer is a different fight entirely. No woman should have to face late-stage breast cancer because a mammogram was out of reach.
This is exactly why organizations like JALBCA matter so much. By funding free mammograms across New York City, they are directly closing that gap and giving women the fighting chance they deserve.
