The businesses that struggle aren't usually struggling because of bad ideas.

They're struggling because the back office hasn't caught up with the front of the house.

1. The revenue is growing — but the books are a mess.
2. The team is expanding — but there's no system for expenses.
3. The owner is working harder than ever — but has no idea if they're actually profitable.

Getting your business operationally ready means making sure the infrastructure matches the ambition.

Clean books. A real budget. Invoicing that runs without you chasing it. Financial statements you can actually read and use. It's not glamorous. But it's what lets you grow on purpose instead of by accident.

Pay Yourself!

You started a business to build something. But also — to get paid.

A lot of business owners treat their own paycheck as the last priority. The business comes first, the team comes first, the expenses come first. And somewhere in the shuffle, they forget to pay themselves at all.

You need to pay yourself. Regularly. On purpose.

Not when it feels comfortable. Not in a lump sum when a big invoice clears. A system — the same way you'd pay anyone else on your team.

Because the goal isn't just to build something great. It's to actually live while you're doing it.

Your accountant shouldn't be your only financial support.

Tax prep is one piece. But it's not the whole picture and by the time you're back in their office next April, a lot has already happened.

If you only talk to your accountant once a year, you're flying blind for 11 months. If no one is reviewing your numbers monthly, you don't have visibility, you have hope. If your financial questions only surface at tax time it's already too late to change the outcome.

There's a gap between tax prep and real financial guidance. Controller services fill it.

Here's how to pay yourself without making a mess of your books..

Don't swipe your business card for personal expenses. Ever. Take the money out of your business account, move it to your personal account, and spend it from there.

That's it.

That one habit keeps your books clean and your finances separate. And when it comes to how much — smaller and regular beats large and sporadic every time.

$2,000 a week is easier to plan around than $20,000 whenever it feels right. For your books, for your budget, for your sanity.

Systematize it. Treat yourself like a vendor you pay on schedule.

Maybe Q1 was rough. Here's how to make sure Q2 isn't.

5 things to do right now:

1. Look at your numbers — actually look at them. Not just your bank balance. Your P&L and balance sheet. What came in, what went out, and why.

2. Set a real budget for the next 90 days. Not a wish list. A plan with actual numbers attached.

3. Fix your invoicing. If you're waiting 45+ days to get paid, that's a cash flow problem disguised as a revenue problem.

4. Know your break-even. Every single month. Non-negotiable.

5. Get a financial partner, not just a tax preparer.
Someone who's in your corner all year — not just in April.

This is exactly what we do at LAHCPAs. If Q2 is the quarter you finally get things under control, let's talk.

Tax season is done.

Which means most business owners are doing one of two things right now:

1. Celebrating that it's over
2. Already stressed about what's next

If you're in group 2 — we see you.

Q2 is actually one of the best times to get things in order. The books are (somewhat) fresh, you have a full picture of last year, and there's still time to make meaningful changes before the year gets away from you.

Here's what "getting ready for Q2" actually looks like:

→ A 90-day cash flow forecast so you're not guessing
→ A budget that reflects what your business actually looks like now
→ Clean books so you can make real decisions
→ A conversation with someone who helps you see around corners

Q2 doesn't have to be reactive. Let's make it intentional.

How do you pay yourself?

A thought: Think of your retirement contributions as paying yourself — just into your future instead of your checking account.

Employees get 401k matches. Benefits. A built-in structure that forces them to think about later.

Business owners have to build that structure themselves. Which means it's easy to skip. And a lot of people do.

But funding a retirement account isn't just smart long-term planning — it often comes with meaningful tax benefits right now.

How much do you need to live on today? And what are you setting aside for the version of you that isn't working anymore?

Let's Talk About Business Credit Cards

You need a business credit card. And you need to use it correctly.

A business card is for business expenses — not only because of tax law, but because mixing personal and business spending is one of the fastest ways to lose visibility into what your company is actually spending.

Clean separation means cleaner books. Cleaner books mean better decisions. And when tax time comes, you're not combing through 12 months of transactions trying to figure out which lunch was a client meeting.

The card is a tool. The system around it is what matters.

Growing revenue doesn’t mean your finances are under control.

Many businesses struggle because one person holds all the financial knowledge — and that creates risk, bottlenecks, and costly turnover.

That’s why more companies are outsourcing controller services. With the right support, you can:

• Protect sensitive data and reduce risk

• Avoid constant hiring and turnover headaches

• Ensure continuity and remove bottlenecks

• Access strategic financial oversight without the full-time cost

If you’re ready to move from reactive bookkeeping to steady, strategic financial leadership, this shows exactly how outsourcing can help.
