How are student loans calculated?

Student loans are calculated based on several factors, including the cost of attendance, financial need, and the type of loan. The cost of attendance includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, housing, and other expenses.

Financial need is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA collects information about a student's and their family's income, assets, and other financial information to determine their Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

The EFC is used to determine the student's financial need, which is the difference between the cost of attendance and the EFC. For example, if the cost of attendance is $20,000 and the EFC is $5,000, the student's financial need is $15,000.

Once the financial need is determined, the type of loan is selected. There are two main types of student loans: federal and private.
