Sophie’s Tip for Nonprofits -

“Track your expenses by program. I know, it’s sounds tedious but when it comes to filing your 990 you will thank yourself. Having a profit and loss by class is the best way to show off your programs accomplishments and make your CPA’s happy. You can do this every day, once a month, or every quarter by sending in your reciepts with the proper coding to your bookkeeper or reviewing your profit and loss by class to see if there are any transactions that didn’t get coded. Not only is it helpful for the 990 but it can also be helpful when making future budgeting decisions.”

Use strong passwords, change them regularly, and enable 2-factor authentication through an app—if you want to be super thorough. It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your business.

These bookkeeping mistakes are quietly costing you money:
• Not reconciling monthly or quarterly
• Mixing personal & business expenses
• Ignoring your financial reports

Small habits will make a huge impact when it comes to cash flow and tax filing. By reconciling, you can review possible bank mistakes or fraud. Mixing business and personal purchases can cause a lot of stress when sorting through transactions at year-end and is time-consuming. Ignoring financial reports prevents you from being prepared for the future. Knowing where your money went last month can help you make decisions about where it should go next month.
