FinCen is now requiring you to file a Beneficial Ownership Information form with them.

If you have a business (LLC, partnership, S-Corp, C-Corp (or any entity that you had to register with the Secretary of State) that was formed before 1/1/24, you have until 1/1/25 to file. If you’re late, the penalty is $500 a day to a maximum of something like $11,000

Today was the first day the system was open to file, and I can tell you that it took me less than 15 minutes to file 4 of these reports.

Just get it done sooner than later and put this task in your rear view mirror.

For those who underpay their taxes, the interest rate is changing dramatically.

As of Oct. 1, the Internal Revenue Service is charging 8% interest on estimated tax underpayments, up from 3% two years ago.

During the annual "tax refresher" class we attended today, the MN Department of Revenue estimates that 90% of retirees receiving social security benefits in 2023 will NOT have to claim income to Minnesota on that source of income. Of course, there are exceptions, and to make matters more confusing there are 2 different calculations that can be used to make this determination and the taxpayer can use whatever method benefits them the most.
