Could a $1,000 Roth conversion trigger $1,800 in additional Medicare premiums? Freeman Linde explains how crossing an income threshold can create an unexpected Medicare cost, even when the Roth conversion itself is relatively small. Understanding Medicare IRMAA and other tax-related thresholds is an important part of retirement tax planning.

Should you do a Roth conversion before retirement?

I get that question quite a bit.

But I don't think the most useful answer is simply yes or no.

As I explain in my book Retire Today, the golden rule of Roth conversions is figuring out how much to convert and for how long.

You need to consider your current tax rate, what your taxes might look like in retirement, and how additional income could affect things like Medicare premiums and Social Security taxation.

Freeman Linde and I recently discussed why paying taxes now can sometimes make sense—and why it can also be better to defer them.

There's no single answer that works for everyone.

The important part is evaluating the decision within your retirement plan rather than following a rule of thumb.

Paying less in taxes doesn't always mean you're coming out ahead. Freeman Linde explains why some tax-saving strategies can actually leave you with less money overall. When planning for retirement, the goal isn't simply to reduce your tax bill—it's to consider how much money you'll have left after taxes.

A smaller tax bill doesn't always mean a better financial outcome.

That's one of the most important distinctions Freeman Linde and I discussed when talking about retirement tax planning.

Evaluate retirement taxes as part of a long-term plan rather than a series of annual tax returns.

The goal isn't simply to pay less in taxes today.

It's to understand how your tax decisions affect the money available to support your retirement over time.

Medicare enrollment isn't the same for everyone turning 65. Qualifying employer coverage matters. Roth conversions and other income decisions can affect future Medicare premiums.

Reviewing your coverage every year is important—even when your health needs haven't changed.

Did you know that retiring can sometimes give you a reason to ask Medicare to lower your premiums?

I worked with a couple whose Medicare premiums were roughly $5,000 higher because Medicare was looking at income from two years earlier.

They had since retired, and their income had changed.

After reviewing their situation, we helped them pursue Medicare's life-changing event process. Their request was approved, reducing those additional Medicare costs.

That won't work for every situation. A Roth conversion or investment sale, for example, generally isn't a qualifying life-changing event by itself.

But it's a good reminder that Medicare and retirement planning go together.

I cover this and four other common Medicare mistakes in the latest Retire Today podcast.

And if you have Medicare Advantage or Part D coverage, remember that annual Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7.

Even if nothing has changed for you, your plan may have changed.

Turning 65 means navigating Medicare Advantage, Medigap, prescription drug plans, and Medicare Parts A, B, and C. With so many choices, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Medicare decisions can be confusing, especially when you're used to having health insurance through your employer.

Turning 65 doesn't automatically mean everyone should make the same Medicare decisions.

Some people are enrolled automatically.

Others need to sign up.

And if you're still working, whether you can delay Medicare may depend on the type of employer coverage you have.

That's one of five Medicare mistakes I recently covered in an article for Kiplinger and on the Retire Today podcast.

The five areas I encourage people to review are:
- Assuming Medicare enrollment is automatic
- Thinking all employer health coverage qualifies the same way
- Confusing Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Parts A, B, and D
- Overlooking how income affects Medicare premiums
- Failing to review Medicare coverage every year

Medicare isn't just a healthcare decision. It can also affect retirement spending, taxes, and the timing of other financial decisions.

If you're approaching 65, it's worth understanding which rules apply to your situation before making an enrollment decision.
