Ohio, The Heart of it All

Episode 50 of Wealth Espresso.

Iced Banana Boat Latte at BARNACLE BREWS COFFEE Banana syrup, coconut cold foam.

Turns out one of the owners played tennis at Ohio State.

Watching the tide roll in and out got me thinking. At high tide it feels like the water will never leave. At low tide it feels like it will never come back. Both feelings are wrong.

Nothing is as good as it seems. Nothing is as bad as it seems.

Fifty coffees down. Thanks for drinking them with me.

One filter. That was the whole plan for LPL focus: Every session I picked, every desk I stopped at, every question I ask, ran through the same test: what does this change for someone whose wealth is tied up in company stock?

Concentrated position positions. Insider sales. The new tax law and what it touches. Trusts that hold a single large stock. Specialized lending. Three days, one lens.

The five most useful things I found come home to my clients over the next month.

The Wanamaker Trophy weighs 27 pounds. It looks even bigger in person.

A great moment from the LPL focus conference in San Diego. With LPL Financial becoming the official wealth management and investment advisory partner of the PGA of America in 2027, it was a fitting guest of honor.

Took this in San Diego earlier this week. The Star of India, launched in 1863, still sailing.

A speaker at the conference I was attending shared a poem that I have not stopped thinking about since. It is called “The Winds of Fate” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, written over a century ago:

“One ship drives east and another drives west
With the selfsame winds that blow.
’Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.
Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate,
As we voyage along through life:
’Tis the set of a soul
That decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife.”

Same wind. Opposite directions. The difference is the sails.

Markets, stock prices, tax laws. None of us control the wind. All of us control the sails.

Set yours on purpose.

Episode 49.5 | Wealth Espresso

Just landed back home from San Diego last night, where I visited a bunch of great coffee shops that I can’t wait to share with you all. We are going to start with the one I tried on the way out at the airport.

The first flight ran perfectly on time. The second one hit delay after delay.

That is most Financial planes if we are honest. You get laid off right after your company post the record record. The market dips the year you planned to retire. The car dies the same month the roof does.

A layover is not a cancellation. What changes is the arrival time, not the destination. A good plan is built with room for delays, so a layover in Nashville does not have to become a trip that ends in Nashville.

True story, I also discovered I skipped an episode number along the way. So this one is 49.5, catching up before the big five-oh.

Cheers,
RD

Day three at LPL Focus. The connections and ideas from this week are exactly why I came, several things I’m bringing straight back to my clients.

Also missing my little guys back in Ohio a bunch. One more big day, then home to them!

Episode 49 | Wealth Espresso

Whole Foods Coffee Bar, Easton

Iced vanilla honey latte this week.

Most people walk right past this spot. A full coffee bar tucked inside a grocery store, and half the shoppers have no idea it exists.

Money can work the same way. Some helpful options may already be sitting right in front of you. A 401k match through work. An HSA you opened and forgot about. An employee stock purchase plan you have never looked into.

Before adding something new, it could be worth reviewing what you already have access to. Everyone’s situation is different, so talk with a financial professional about what makes sense for you.

“Dada, it’s not scary, it’s dark!” - My two year old, Simon

07/30/2026

Lately I have been noticing more people getting laid off.

If that is on your mind, the thing that helps most is cash. Not a perfect plan. Just more cash in the account than you had last month.

Start with one more month of expenses saved. Add up what actually leaves your account in a normal month, then work toward that number. If you can build past one month, keep going. Every month you add buys you time to make a good decision instead of a rushed one.

You cannot control what your employer decides. You can control how long you can go without a paycheck.
