🔗 We often have designers who come to us never having used an accounting software before.

We help recommend the best software to use (or not to use) and which level/subscription needed.

We also assist with all the settings and even a custom chart of accounts specifically for the interior design industry. 🌷

Here's the GREAT thing about payment processing fees... they're tax deductible! 💰

But the bad news is, a lot of designers aren't tracking their processing fees correctly.

The MAJOR mistake I see designers make when it comes to payment processing fees is double-counting them!

This means you've recorded your sales *net* of your fees AND recorded fees as an expense line item.

This leads to understated income (a BIG no-no) 🚫

If you're confused about how to properly account for your payment processing fees, I can help!

Marketing is a lot sexier than bookkeeping, I can't argue with you there! 😉

But, common accounting formulas like your ROI can help you determine whether you're getting your money's worth out of your marketing campaigns.

For example, if you spend $1,000 on a new marketing campaign and track that you've gained $2,500 in new business directly due to that campaign, you know you've gotten a 150% return. 📈

It doesn't stop there - great bookkeeping can help you gain TONS of useful insights like these about your interior design business!

Want an easy hack to help you figure out how much to pay yourself every month WITHOUT taking too much money out of your interior design business?

If you are a sole proprietor or the owner of a single-member LLC, here's an easy framework you can follow! 👇

We're going to start with your bottom line: your net income.

The FIRST thing you need to do is set aside money for your taxes. A general rule of thumb to follow is to save 30% of your net income for taxes.

It's better to save more than you need than to be hit with a surprisingly big tax bill in April! 📆

Next, determine how much of your net income you need to use for business savings. 20% might be a good place to start.

This leaves 50% of your net income available to pay yourself! 💸

My Top 3️⃣ Tips For Creating Key Performance Indicators 👇

1️⃣ Clearly Define Your Goals

To set custom KPIs for your business, you need to write down exactly what goals you want to achieve.

From here, you’ll figure out which metrics should be tracked to benchmark your progress toward these goals!

2️⃣ KPIs Must Be Measurable

Your KPIs need to be calculated from metrics that you are (1) already tracking or (2) have the ability to track.

For example, when you have great bookkeeping, your monthly sales are a great KPI that’s already being recorded.

3️⃣ Track KPIs On A Regular Basis

Your KPIs aren’t useful if you aren’t calculating them on a regular basis.

Whether you’re trying to hit weekly, monthly, or quarterly goals, knowing your KPIs on a regular basis gives you time to adjust your strategy as needed!

It’s That Time Again…

✨ If you're an interior designer making a profit, don’t forget about Estimated Tax Payments! ✨

Even though taxes feel so last season after April, quarterly estimated tax deadlines continue throughout the year — and June is one of them.

💡 What are Estimated Taxes?
If you don’t have taxes withheld from your income (like you would with a paycheck), you’re likely required to pay the IRS in quarterly installments. This applies to many design business owners and freelancers!

💼 Why it matters for designers:
That dreamy new client project?
That gorgeous retainer you collected?
Those monthly invoices stacking up?
They’re all likely taxable income — and skipping your estimated tax payment could mean penalties down the line.

🔍 Pro Tip from Your Bookkeeper:
Don’t guess your payment! Work with your bookkeeper or CPA to review your profits so far this year and calculate your estimated payment accurately. (Hint: We help our clients do this all the time 😉)
