Sarah Rector became a millionaire by age 12 after oil was discovered on her family’s land in Oklahoma—making her one of the wealthiest Black children in America.

As her fortune grew, the state even reclassified her as “white,” so she could legally manage her money—an unsettling reminder of how race and wealth were treated under the law.

Her story is power, legacy, and history all in one. 💰👑

Bernard Garrett started with entrepreneurship—launching cleaning and recycling/wastepaper businesses—then turned his momentum into real estate investing in Los Angeles. When discriminatory barriers blocked Black investors from buying in certain neighborhoods, Garrett and business partner Joe (Joseph B.) Morris found ways to operate within an unfair system while still owning and running the assets.
Together, they grew a powerful real estate portfolio—famously purchasing major downtown properties, including the Bankers Building—and later expanded into banking, acquiring multiple banks and savings & loans in Texas starting in the mid-1960s.

Ted Rhodes (1913–1969) learned golf as a caddie in Nashville, practicing in public parks when courses were segregated. In 1948, he became the first African American to compete in the U.S. Open since 1913. He also helped challenge the PGA’s “Caucasians-only” clause—an exclusionary policy removed in 1961.
His excellence on the UGA tour, leadership, and mentorship created pathways for future generations. Nashville later renamed Cumberland Golf Course to Ted Rhodes Golf Course in his honor.
Legacy isn’t just what you build—it’s what you make possible for others. 🖤
