Did you know that your Health Insurance Marketplace premium tax credit can be claimed at tax time instead of in as an advance credit on premium payments? You can claim the full benefit of the premium tax credit that you are allowed when you file your tax return, which will increase your refund or lower the amount of tax that you would owe.

Just a friendly reminder:

The IRS will NEVER contact you by email and very rarely by phone. If you do receive a call claiming to be from the IRS ask that they send their message via mail and NEVER give them any information. To take things a step further, look the number up in the Whitepages. More than likely you'll find that it's a scammer trying to steal your information and trick you into sending them money.

Tax Topic:
Child and Dependent Care Credit -
You may be able to claim the child and dependent care credit if you paid expenses for the care of a qualifying individual to enable you (and your spouse, if filing a joint return) to work or actively look for work. You may not take this credit if your filing status is married filing separately. The amount of the credit is a percentage of the amount of work-related expenses you paid to a care provider for the care of a qualifying individual. The percentage depends on your adjusted gross income.

Dollar Amount: The total expenses that you may use to calculate the credit MAY NOT be more than $3,000 (for one qualifying individual) or $6,000 (for two or more qualifying individuals).

If you need further assistance to determine whether you eligible for the child and dependent care credit, please contact our office.

Question: I started my own business, can I deduct my home office expenses?

Answer: Though this is a legitimate tax deduction, expenses for home office should be used exclusively and regularly for the home office, and not a space that is mixed residential and business.

If you need help determining whether you qualify for the home office deduction, please contact our office. We would be glad to help you.

Question: What are qualified education expenses? And when can I file?

Answer:
There are a number of education credits and deductions, including the American Opportunity Credit, which was extended through 2017. The credit helps with the cost of higher education expenses such as tuition, certain fees and course materials. It benefits full-time and part-time college students with a maximum $2,500 credit per student, based on income requirements.

The following expenses DO NOT QUALIFY:
- Room and board
- Transportation
- Insurance
- Medical Expenses
- Student fees UNLESS REQUIRED as a condition of enrollment or attendance
- Same expenses paid with tax-free education assistance
- Same expenses used for any other tax deduction, credit or education benefit.

You can file anytime. However, if you were enrolled in college full/part time you will need to get your 1098 from your College/University.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact our office. We would be happy to help you.

Question: What are the tax implications of withdrawing money early from a retirement account?

Answer: Withdrawing money early from a retirement account comes with a 10 percent tax penalty, plus regular income tax on the amount withdrawn. Watch out if that additional retirement money bumps you into the next tax bracket, which could affect Social Security taxes and other considerations.

If you need help, please feel free to contact our office. We would be happy to help.
