This weekend (3/15-3/16) are the final two days to bring your tax documents in to have the return done by the 4/15 tax deadline. We can file an extension for you if you don’t have everything together. Filing an extension is not an extension to pay if you owe. Drop off at the front desk today, drop box outside all weekend or ask us for a link to upload to our client portal.

Advance Premium Tax Credit / Marketplace Insurance / "Obamacare" UPDATE

Of of today the software has been updated with IRS guidance to allow returns with a premium tax credit repayment to be E-Filed. The over credited portion will not show up on the return.

There has been no guidance on returns that were previously filed with an advanced premium tax credit repayment.

Unemployment Update

We have as of last week started to file returns with unemployment. Federal has excluded $10,200 of income but WI has decoupled from the federal tax law which means it is taxable in WI. For clients we had on hold you have already heard back and we have filed those returns.

For returns previously filed before the new tax laws went into effect. The IRS strongly recommends not filing an amended return and they will issue refunds with the information they have. We have no other information or time line on this. After tax season we will recalculate returns and contact you to make sure you received the refund you deserved. If you did not we will give you the option to file an amendment.

Unemployment and Premium Tax Credit - ARP Act

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 makes a portion of unemployment compensation non-taxable for certain filers and eliminates repayment of excess funds received through the Advance Premium Tax Credit.

We have held some returns in anticipation of this ruling and will be filing amendments to those that wish to amend their return if they have already filed.

We expect the IRS to issue official guidance in the next week or two. At that point the software companies will need to re-code and the IRS will need to approve the forms. We have/will inform you if your return is being held and for those who have already filed they may call the office to request an amendment.

More information will be given once it's available.
