The IRS has extended the federal tax filing deadline for all 95 Tennessee counties to June 8, 2026. No action is needed to receive this relief. It applies automatically to every Tennessee taxpayer.

That is good news. But June 8 will come faster than you think.

Now is the right time to get your documents together and get ahead of the deadline. Here is what you will want to have ready:

The IRS is feeling generous this year! The tax relief for individuals and businesses in Tennessee affected by Winter Storm Fern has been expanded to taxpayers in ALL 95 counties in the state of Tennessee. Tennessee taxpayers now have until June 8, 2026, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

TN-2026-01, April 3, 2026 — The IRS announced today tax relief for individuals and businesses in Tennessee affected by Winter Storm Fern that began on Jan. 22, 2026.

If you live or have a business in one of the Tennessee counties affected by Winter Storm Fern, the IRS has granted you an automatic extension to May 22, 2026 to file and pay your federal taxes. There is nothing you need to do to receive this relief; the IRS applies it automatically based on your address.

Qualifying counties include: Cheatham, Chester, Clay, Davidson, Decatur, Dickson, Hardeman, Hardin, Henderson, Hickman, Lawrence, Lewis, Macon, Maury, McNairy, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, Williamson, and Wilson.

This relief covers individual income tax returns, business returns, quarterly payroll and excise tax returns, and estimated tax payments - all pushed to May 22.

‼️One important thing to know: The May 22 disaster relief does not replace a formal extension. If you want to extend your filing deadline all the way to October, you must still submit your extension request (Form 4868) by April 15, 2026.

A myth about tax extension are that tax extensions allow you to delay your tax payment. Regardless of when you file your tax return, if you do not pay the tax you owe by the tax filing deadline, the IRS penalties can be severe. The IRS will charge you one-half percent each month on the amount of tax you still owe after the deadline.
