Hey everyone! Greg here from Ellis & Co Bookkeeping

I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and share a little bit about how I ended up where I am today.

I’m a U.S. Navy veteran, rental home owner, IT support professional, and bookkeeper/accountant, and each of those roles has shaped how I show up for the business owners I support.

During the Gulf War, I served as an Electronics Warfare Technician in the Navy. That experience taught me discipline, attention to detail, and how to stay calm and focused when things get challenging.

After the military, I spent 25 years in IT, starting as an entry-level tech and eventually moving into leadership. I’ve always enjoyed helping people make sense of complex systems and solving problems that others might find overwhelming.

About three years ago, I decided to shift gears and dive into accounting. Since then, I’ve worked for both a bookkeeping company and a CPA firm, gaining hands-on experience supporting small businesses with their financials. Alongside that, I also own and manage rental property, so I understand the day-to-day realities and financial responsibilities that come with running a business.

Now, I’ve pulled all of that experience together to launch Ellis & Co Bookkeeping, where I help small businesses get clarity and confidence in their numbers.

As a bookkeeper, I always recommend having a dedicated computer solely for your business. And as someone with a prior IT career, I know this can feel like an unnecessary or expensive step—but it’s one of the smartest investments you can make.

Mixing personal and business use increases exposure to malware, phishing, and accidental data leaks. Something as simple as letting a family member browse the web can expose your computer and data to threats. A dedicated machine keeps your work environment controlled and reduces vulnerabilities.

While it may feel like a big upfront cost, the security and peace of mind it provides far outweigh the investment.

Keeping your personal and business bank accounts separate is very, very important. By keeping these accounts separate, you won't be confused when recording your business transactions.

Time spent recording transactions will be lower as you will know that all entries on your bank statement are specifically for your business.

Lately, I've been getting many questions about AI, mainly from people who ask whether I'm nervous about my career choice. These individuals point out that Amazon recently laid off about 14,000 corporate employees due to AI. My answer is simple: no.

No, I'm not worried about AI. AI is simply a tool to assist workers in their productivity. AI still has too many bugs to be 100% reliable in providing correct answers. It will still take a knowledgeable professional to ensure that AI doesn't make mistakes. I've personally seen AI misclassify payroll expenses, which would have resulted in tax problems for the business owner, among other issues.

So, for all those who believe that AI can replace the seasoned professionals you currently employ, or those whom you previously employed, I caution you to be vigilant. AI is great, but it's not infallible. You can seriously hurt your business if you rely entirely on AI for your business needs.
