IRS Reminds Taxpayers to Prepare for 2026 Filing Season:

The IRS is reminding taxpayers to take certain steps early in 2026 to prepare for the upcoming filing season. The announcement (IR-2025-116) urges taxpayers to visit the website www.irs.gov/individuals/get-ready-to-file-your-taxes to review new items and considerations before filing. With the passage of the 2025 Act (formerly known as One Big Beautiful Bill or OBBB), taxpayers may see significant changes to federal taxes, credits and deductions. Having organized records by collecting bank account information, Form W-2, Form 1099 , and records of digital asset transactions may assist taxpayers in preparing for filing. The announcement also highlights the use of IRS online accounts, which allows taxpayers to securely view recently filed returns and other important information.

Additionally, the notice reminds taxpayers that in accordance with Executive Order 14247, the IRS has begun to phase out the issuance of paper checks. Most taxpayers will need to provide bank account and routing numbers for refunds to be directly deposited into their bank accounts. News Release IR-2025-116.

Hobby or Business?

How to Decide Between a Hobby or a Business
The IRS has advised taxpayers on how to decide between a hobby or a business. (IRS Tax Tip 2025-42)

Hobbies and businesses are treated differently in tax law. The biggest difference between the two is that businesses operate to make a profit while hobbies are for pleasure or recreation.

Either way, the IRS cautioned that if taxpayers are paid through payment apps for goods and services during the year, they may receive an IRS Form 1099-K for those transactions. These payments are taxable income and must be reported on federal tax returns.

There are a few things people should consider when deciding whether their project is a hobby or a business. The IRS emphasized that no single thing is the deciding factor. Taxpayers should review all the factors to make the best decision.

The IRS listed the following questions to help taxpayers decide if they have a hobby or business:

Is there an intent to make a profit?
If the activity makes a profit, how much is it?
Can they expect to make a future profit from the appreciation of the assets used in the activity?
Do they depend on income from the activity for their livelihood?
Are any losses due to circumstances beyond their control or are the losses normal for the startup phase of their type of business?
Are operations adjusted to improve profitability?
Is the activity carried out like a business with complete and accurate books and records kept?
Do the taxpayer and their advisors have the knowledge needed to carry out the activity as a successful business?
The IRS noted that whether taxpayers have a hobby or run a business, good recordkeeping throughout the year will help when they file their tax returns.

Today, the Social Security Administration announced it is immediately beginning to pay retroactive benefits and will increase monthly benefit payments to people whose benefits have been affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduced or eliminated the Social Security benefits for over 3.2 million people who receive a pension based on work that was not covered by Social Security (a "non-covered pension") because they did not pay Social Security taxes. The Social Security Fairness Act ends WEP and GPO.
