Due to Covid-19 we are requesting all clients with tax appointments scheduled in the upcoming days and weeks to electronically send (or mail if not able) documents to your usual preparer in our office. This option gives us the opportunity to prepare and file your tax returns timely while also respecting the safety of our clients and staff.

Although it is unknown how serious the virus will effect our area, we believe that it is smartest to be overprotective at this time. Our staff will still be available by email and phone with every intention to prepare and file all tax returns timely and accurately. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and please let us know how we can accommodate you.

**YEAR END PLANNING 👀

Small business owners who are operating on a cash basis may want to consider prepaying/deducting certain expenses under the 12-month rule.

An expense paid in advance is deductible only to the year to which it applies, UNLESS the expense qualifies for the 12-month rule. 👉🏼 The 12-month rule provides that a taxpayer is not required to capitalize prepaid amounts that do not extend beyond the earlier of 12 months after the benefit begins, or the end of the tax year after the tax year in which payment is made (i.e. next year).

-In other words, most taxpayers on the cash basis may prepay in 2019 for up to 12 months of future expenses in 2020 and deduct those expenses when paid in 2019. 🙌

**The 12-month prepaid expense rule does not apply to inventory items or interest**

Even with the new federal tax law changes, MN residents may still benefit from itemizing deductions on the state return. It is a good idea to bring in the same documents as prior years (even if you don't think you'll need them). See you all soon!!
