Let’s clear some sets real quick!! Before you say “my tax person charged me $500… pause for a second and read this.
Here’s what a lot of tax clients don’t realize
Your tax prep fee might actually be fair, but it’s usually not the only fee on your return.
Let’s break some information down:
Bank product fees → paid to the bank, not your tax preparer
Refund advances / loans → lender fees, not preparer money
Service bureau fees → third-party charges
E-file & transmission fees → required to send your return
Software fees → built into the system and can’t be removed
The only fee your preparer actually controls is the tax preparation fee.
So before you get mad, get informed
What you should always do:
Read your fee disclosure (don’t skip it)
Ask questions beforeyou sign
Make sure everything makes sense to YOU
If your tax preparer can’t explain your fees in plain language, that’s your cue to find someone who can.
Knowledge saves you money and confusion.
If you want to prevent those fee associated with filing your tax return you can e-file and pay upfront.
