For a lot of Monroe County families, Thanksgiving is the one weekend three generations sit at the same table. And somewhere between the meal and the game, someone notices Mom is moving a little slower this year.

Most families notice. Very few say anything.

This week's blog is my October Monroe County Magazine column, written as someone living it. It's about opening the just-in-case conversation gently, and why it runs in both directions: your kids need the same answers you're asking your parents for.

This fall, a few of the families we work with are doing something a lot of parents around here are quietly doing: helping their kids buy a first home.

The generous part comes easy. The harder question comes next: is it a gift, or a loan?

It sounds like a detail. It isn't. Money handed over informally is usually treated as a gift to the couple, and paperwork starts above $19,000 per person per year. A family loan needs real terms and a minimum IRS interest rate. Each choice plays out differently years down the road.

So before any money moves, we work it through together, alongside their CPA and attorney, and put it on paper.

What stays with me isn't the math. It's parents who want to give their kids a good start, and want to do it in a way that keeps the family close. They're the people behind our numbers.

If you're thinking about helping a son or daughter into a home, we're glad to have that conversation first.

Last week we talked about the house, and why it's often the hardest thing to let go of in a divorce.

This week, the other side of that: the people who help you land.

Starting over takes more than a plan. It takes people. A parent with a spare room. A sibling who co-signs a lease. Family who wants to help with a down payment on the next place.

That help is a gift in every sense. It's also money, and money remembered differently a few years later can strain the very relationships you're leaning on. So decide together, out loud: is it a gift or a loan? Then write it down. A simple note protects the help and the relationship.

Lean on the people who love you. Just make it clear for everyone.

It's Estate Planning Awareness Week, a good reminder that an estate plan isn't a one-time project.

The essentials most families need:
📄 A will or trust
📄 A durable power of attorney for finances
📄 A health care power of attorney (in Michigan, a patient advocate designation) and a living will
📄 Beneficiary forms on retirement accounts and life insurance

A good rule of thumb is to review them every three to five years, and any time life changes: a marriage, a divorce, a new child or grandchild, a move, or the sale of a business.

One that often gets missed: when a child turns 18, they're a legal adult. Parents may no longer be able to see medical information or help with finances without the right paperwork. It may be worth having them sign their own health care directive, durable power of attorney and a HIPAA release, especially before they head off to college.

Start with A Conversation with us, then sit down with your estate planning attorney.

Two ways to write off the same equipment, and they are not interchangeable.

Both bonus depreciation and Section 179 are generous right now. The difference shows up when the deduction is bigger than your income:

• Bonus depreciation has no income limit. It can push taxable income below zero and create a net operating loss.
• Section 179 can't create a loss. Anything over your business income carries forward, and when you finally use it, it can lower your self-employment tax too. A carried-forward loss from bonus never does that.

So it's a trade between timing and character. For most owners, bonus is the default. But there are real exceptions, including heavy SUVs, the excess business loss rules, and how S-corps and partnerships apply the limits.

Worth sorting out with your CPA before year-end.

And if the bigger question is what the business should be buying at all, and when, that's A Conversation. No documents, no homework. Just where you are, where you want to go, and what's been on your mind.

Fall in our house means five teenagers, four of them in sports, and a family calendar that needs its own coordinator.

Cross country meets. Volleyball nights in the gym. Soccer on weekend mornings. Somebody always needs a ride, a clean uniform, or a snack for the bus.

None of it works with just one or two people. It takes coaches, carpools, grandparents, neighbors, co-parents, and a lot of grace when the plan falls apart at 6:45 on a Tuesday. (It does. Often.)

These kids are the people behind our numbers. They're the why behind what we do.

And we know we're not unique. Most of the families we sit down with are doing well at work and still juggling more than anyone sees. Good financial planning isn't about "doing better" for its own sake. It's about taking care of each other, helping out where we can, and loving the people who count on us.

To every parent in the bleachers and the driver's seat this fall: we see you. 🍂

Keep the house, or let it go?

For many people going through a divorce, the house is the most emotional asset on the table. It’s where the kids grew up. It feels like stability.

But a house also needs cash every month: the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, utilities, and the repairs nobody plans for. Before deciding to keep it, it helps to see what it really costs in the life you’re building next, and what you might be giving up in the settlement to keep it.

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA®), this is one of the conversations I help people think through, alongside their attorney.

New beginnings deserve a clear picture. 💚
