Hello! Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? Our AARP Tax-Aide volunteers have been so busy this tax season that we haven't been posting much. I did want to let you all know that all of our appointments for the remainder of this tax season have been filled. Thank you to all of the partner organizations that have shared out our information this year! Special thanks to the City of Independence, Oregon and the City of Monmouth, Oregon - Government for sharing our information with all of their newsletter subscribers this year! We'll be back again to start taking your 2026 tax year filing season appointments beginning January 15, 2027!

If you are eligible for the Oregon Kicker or any other refundable tax credits, you need to file a tax return to receive the funds -- even if you don't have a reason to file otherwise (for example, your 2025 income was lower than the filing threshold). Hello all - AARP Tax-Aide and WOU VITA will offer FREE income tax preparation and assistance for low-moderate income, senior, disabled, and non-English speaking taxpayers* in the Monmouth-Independence area, at the WOU Welcome Center this year. We are open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from Saturday, February 7th until Saturday, April 11th. Hours of operation are Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00am-3:00pm (Tax-Aide) and 4:00pm-7:00pm (VITA). On Saturdays we are open from 9:00am-12:00pm noon (Tax-Aide) and 12:30pm-5:00pm (VITA) for appointments only. We do not accept walk-in tax preparation appointments. Please make your appointment on our website https://MITaxResources.org, or text our appointment lines at 971-915-0316 (Tax-Aide) or 503-751-4132 (VITA). Our phone line is only answered during normal operating hours, so making an online or text appointment is highly recommended. If texting your appointment request, please share your name, email address, and your preferred appointment date/time. ***PLEASE NOTE*** Please be patient while we return all of the calls, texts and other requests. We have received well over 100 requests today (1/15) and are staffed 100% by volunteers!

Hello Commmunity! AARP Tax-Aide is almost completely out of appointments for tax season! We would like to remind you that our "sister" location, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Western Oregon University has more than double the number of appointment time slots because they have a larger space and many more certified preparers. They also still have availability for February, if you want to get your refund sooner! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers FREE basic tax return preparation, by fully trained & certified tax preparers, to individuals that (1) earn $67k or less, (2) have a disability, or (3) are limited or non-English-speaking.

Our Faceboook name change was approved! Now it's even more clear that we serve the combined communities of Monmouth and Independence!

We look forward to seeing you at our new location for 2025 -- the Independence Civic Center, located at 555 S Main St in Independence. We are in the Council Chambers on the 1st floor from 9am-3pm on Mondays and Fridays between February 10-April 14, providing FREE income tax return preparation for low-to-moderate income taxpayers in our community. NOTE: Even though funding and training is provided by the AARP Foundation -- this program is not limited to Seniors or AARP members. If you are not sure if you would qualify, give us a call and we'll help you confirm, but the vast majority of taxpayers in our community qualify for these free services. Appointments are required. Thanks to our returning taxpayers and word-of-mouth about our site, we have received hundreds of calls asking for tax preparation appointments! We ask taxpayers to remember we are staffed by volunteers and the avalanche of calls we receive at the beginning of each tax season takes some time to get through. We are working through the calls every day and there is plenty of appointment availability for all those who have called in and left messages. Our first appointments are offered on Monday, February 10th and space remains available in February, March and April. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers provide tax assistance to anyone with low to moderate income, free of charge. You don't need to be an AARP member to use the service. This year our Intake paperwork will be available for pick-up at three places - the Monmouth Library, the Independence Library and the Polk County Family & Community Outreach/Resource Center at the S-curve (behind Roth's). Hello Community! It's that time again...and AARP Tax-Aide is here to help you file your taxes. Our services are absolutely free of charge! We receive training and funding support from the AARP Foundation to provide free tax preparation to seniors and low-to-moderate income individuals and families in our community. We are accepting appointments NOW! Please call or text us at ‪(971) 915-0316‬ and leave a message, including your name, phone number and your preference of appointment date/time. One of our volunteers will call you back to confirm an appointment. This year we are operating at the Independence Civic Center, located at 555 S. Main Street in Independence. If you or a loved one is 73 years of age or older, please remember that the deadline to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from individual retirement arrangements (IRAs) and other retirement plans by 12/31/2024 (if 74 or older inb 2024) or by 4/1/25 (if turned 73 during 2024).

IR-2024-309, Dec. 10, 2024 — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded those aged 73 and older of the deadline to take required minimum distributions from individual retirement arrangements (IRAs) and other retirement plans, and highlighted updates introduced by the SECURE 2.0 Act.

We're looking for a few more volunteers for Monmouth AARP Tax-Aide! Please consider joing with our other volunteers to provide free, high quality tax preparation services to low-to-moderate income members of our local community. AARP membership is not required and all ages are welcome! No previous tax experience is required. All training is provided through the program. Volunteers usually complete their training during December and January. Tax Season starts the first week of February and goes through April 15th.
