A recent federal court ruling may open the door for taxpayers to claim refunds for certain IRS penalties and interest assessed during the COVID period.

If you paid IRS late-filing, late-payment, or related penalties between 2020 and 2023, you may be eligible to file a claim for a refund or abatement. Most taxpayers must act by July 10, 2026.

For those who didnโ€™t file by the April deadline:

There is no penalty for filing late if a refund is due. Penalties and interest only accrue on unfiled tax returns if taxes are not paid by April 15, the tax filing deadline this year in most states.

Anyone who did not file and owes tax should file a tax return as soon as they can and pay as much as possible to reduce penalties and interest.
