MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WALA) -- The Alabama Department of Labor announced Monday that people who are unable to work due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be eligible to file for unemployment benefits.
State Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington said Alabama is modifying rules to allow the claims if workers are affected in any of the following ways:
• Those who are quarantined by a medical professional or a government agency.
• Those who are laid off or sent home without pay for an extended period by their employer due to COVID-19 concerns.
• Those who are diagnosed with COVID-19.
• Those who are caring for an immediate family member who is diagnosed with COVID-19.
The state said laid-off workers will not be required to be “able and available” to work, and will not be required to search for other work. The first week waiting period of compensable benefits will also be waived.
Workers can file for benefits online at www.labor.alabama.gov or by calling 1-866-234-5382. Online filing is encouraged.
People who are being paid to work from home, or those receiving paid sick or vacation leave are NOT eligible for unemployment compensation benefits, regardless if they experience any or all of the situations listed above.
Workers can begin filing claims on Monday, March 23, 2020.

Dear EASI Client,

In these uncertain times, we wanted to reach out to let you know that we are open for business at EASI, and we will continue to process payrolls as scheduled. Please send hours and payroll changes as early as possible so that we can stay ahead of schedule.

Our customers, our employees, and our community are our top priorities. At EASI, we feel it is critical to do our part to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please know that we are monitoring this ever-evolving situation.

Here are a few ways that you can help limit the number of personal interactions at the EASI office or at your place of business:

1.) Encourage employees who are picking up live checks to sign up for direct deposit
2.) Encourage employees who are picking up paper pay stubs to sign up for emailed pay stubs instead (just send us their name and email address)
3.) If you are dropping off hours or picking up checks and reports for your business, please let us know ahead of time. We can work on a plan to either move your business to paperless options for the time being, or we can meet you outside of our office with your payroll package.

Thanks for an amazing 2019! Wishing you all the best as we head into a new year.

We want to introduce the new 2020 W4 tax withholding form. Please note that this form is very different from the 2019 version.

“Current employees do not have to complete a new form, but you may consider giving them the option. You may not require it. Also, remember, it is not your responsibility to help employees complete the form. Happy Holidays from EASI!

As we quickly near the end of another successful year, we want to thank you for your continued partnership with EASI.

We would like to remind you of some important information before year-end:

Please send all 2019 W2 edits no later than this Friday, December 6th
• Social Security # changes
• Address changes
• Auto usage
• Health insurance expenses
• Workers compensation or third party pay

EASI will be closed for the holidays on the following days and times:
Tuesday, December 24th – Close at noon
Wednesday, December 25th – Closed
Tuesday, December 31st – Close at 2pm
Wednesday, January 1st – Closed
*If your pay day falls around the holidays, please submit all payroll changes and hours one day earlier than usual.
