Not ready to file your personal return (aka Form 1040) just yet?

The deadline (for most taxpayers) to file your extension this year is April 15th! πŸ“†

But before you extend and call it a day, make sure you know this: if you owe any taxes, they're still *due* on April 15th.

But how do I know how much to pay in taxes if I haven't filed my return?

Really good question!

The goal of an extension payment is to make your best guess at what you’ll owe when you file.

You can use last year’s tax return as a baseline, then add in any new income/changes, subtract any withholdings/payments, and don’t forget to factor in self-employment tax.

When the cars are covered in yellow pollen, and you can't stop sneezing every 5 seconds, you know how to fix it...

You pop your allergy medicine. 🀧

But when your bookkeeper starts asking all sorts of questions about your numbers, and you can't answer them...

Why are you powering through with no help?!

Good bookkeeping is literally the cure to a stressful tax season (and it's as easy as giving us a call today!)

Your bank account is GREAT at doing one thing: showing exactly how much money your business has at this point in time. πŸ’°

But your P&L helps answer the hard-hitting questions, like:

"Is this business actually profitable?"

"How much can I afford to pay myself?"

"Where am I spending the most money in my business?"

If you want to take charge of your business, you need to be using BOTH of these things to inform your decisions.

If you feel like you've heard "ordinary + necessary" a billion times, it's because it comes directly from Β§162 of the tax code. βš–οΈ

If you want to write off a business expense, it needs to be both:

Ordinary β†’ commonly accepted in your industry.

Necessary β†’ helpful and appropriate for your business.

A business buying designer shades because they sometimes work outside? Probably not gonna fly with the IRS. 🀨

Almost every business starts by doing their bookkeeping in Google Sheets. It's like a rite of passage at this point. 🀭

Butttt, when your business inevitably grows...

And you're still entering every transaction by hand (but now it takes 4x as long), and you can't do handy things like automatically match your credit card payments; you've outgrown your spreadsheet.

Ready to make the switch? Welcome to the dark side. πŸ€—

Duplicate accounts, inactive bank accounts, outdated bank rules... over the years, they all add up to creating a pretty messy bookkeeping file. 😢

Treat your books to a little spring cleaning with the checklist on the next slide!

And if you're a business who's more than a little behind (aka you haven't done any of your 2026 bookkeeping yet), it's time for us to talk about Hometown Bookkeeping taking your books off your plate for good!

There's something about the 15 seconds after you hit the "file" button when you magically remember that *one* form you forgot... 😬

First, take a deep breath. This happens so often that the IRS has a whole process for you to follow!

If you forgot a form (like a W-2, 1099, or K-1) that changes your income, credits, or tax liability, you probably need to amend your return.

No biggie, you'll just file Form 1040-X once you have the missing form!

If you made a minor informational error that doesn't affect your tax liability, you might be able to get away with not amending (but it's always good to check for guidance on your exact error using the IRS's website).

For clients at Hometown Bookkeeping, we verify that every document we know about shows up on your tax return to get things right the first time!
