🚨🚨🚨🚨

If you make quarterly estimated tax payments, mark your calendar. The third estimated tax payment for 2026 is due September 15.

Self-employed individuals, retirees, investors, and others who have income that isn’t subject to withholding may need to make estimated tax payments. Making payments on time can help taxpayers avoid an unexpected tax bill or possible penalties.

Not ready to file your personal return (aka Form 1040) just yet?

The deadline (for most taxpayers) to file your extension this year is April 15th! 📆

But before you extend and call it a day, make sure you know this: if you owe any taxes, they're still *due* on April 15th.

But how do I know how much to pay in taxes if I haven't filed my return?

Really good question!

The goal of an extension payment is to make your best guess at what you’ll owe when you file.

You can use last year’s tax return as a baseline, then add in any new income/changes, subtract any withholdings/payments, and don’t forget to factor in self-employment tax.

When the cars are covered in yellow pollen, and you can't stop sneezing every 5 seconds, you know how to fix it...

You pop your allergy medicine. 🤧

But when your bookkeeper starts asking all sorts of questions about your numbers, and you can't answer them...

Why are you powering through with no help?!

Good bookkeeping is literally the cure to a stressful tax season (and it's as easy as giving us a call today!)

Your bank account is GREAT at doing one thing: showing exactly how much money your business has at this point in time. 💰

But your P&L helps answer the hard-hitting questions, like:

"Is this business actually profitable?"

"How much can I afford to pay myself?"

"Where am I spending the most money in my business?"

If you want to take charge of your business, you need to be using BOTH of these things to inform your decisions.

If you feel like you've heard "ordinary + necessary" a billion times, it's because it comes directly from §162 of the tax code. ⚖️

If you want to write off a business expense, it needs to be both:

Ordinary → commonly accepted in your industry.

Necessary → helpful and appropriate for your business.

A business buying designer shades because they sometimes work outside? Probably not gonna fly with the IRS. 🤨
