Hiring your children in your business may offer legitimate tax advantages when done properly.

Wages paid to your child may be deductible as a business expense, and depending on their age and your business structure, there may also be payroll tax savings available.

To help stay compliant with IRS rules:
- The work must be legitimate
- Pay should be reasonable for the work performed
- Hours and job duties should be documented
- Proper payroll records should be maintained

Talk with your tax professional before setting up payroll for family members.

Of all the roles a small business owner takes on, often the most challenging is managing the business’s finances.

The reasons are many, but most business owners don’t have a background in business finance, and at least at the start, are more focused on bringing in business and serving the customers than they are on record keeping and financial planning for their business.

As a result, many work long and hard at their businesses with only mediocre success to show for their efforts. Others fail completely.

It’s inevitable that you’ll make some financial mistakes and learn some hard lessons as a business owner, but it’s important to be aware of the most common mistakes so you can avoid them.

You can improve your chances for success and profitability by being aware of and steering clear of these common financial mistakes.

Just because you traveled does not automatically mean the entire trip is tax deductible!

Business travel must have a clear business purpose to qualify for deductions.

Keep records for flights, hotels, mileage, parking, tolls, meals, and other business related expenses. Save receipts, mileage logs, and document who you met with and the purpose of the trip.

If your travel includes both personal and business activities, only the business related portion may qualify.
