Beware. There is a new kind of tax scam. Scammers are calling people and politely asking them to verify information from their tax returns, such as their social security numbers. The IRS will not contact you by phone. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS - hostile or polite - simply hang up the phone. Official tax correspondence is done by mail.

Another tax scam reminder...These scams are becoming very popular. The most important thing to remember is that the IRS always contacts you with a problem BY MAIL. If anyone calls you claiming to be the IRS, hang up the phone. If you get an email, don't even open it.

Beware of tax scams! It is becoming extremely common for people to pose as IRS agents and call or email people looking for money or personal information. The IRS will always contact you by mail if you are having a tax problem. They will not call you or email you. if you receive a phone call, hang up immediately. If you receive an email, do not open it.
