NOTE FOR 2021 TAX RETURNS - The IRS started issuing information letters to advance child tax credit recipients in December.

Recipients of the third round of the Economic Impact Payments will begin receiving information letters at the end of January. Using the information in these letters when preparing a tax return can reduce errors and delays in processing.

People receiving these letters should keep them. Do not throw them away. These letters can help taxpayers, or their tax professional prepare their 2021 federal tax return.

Be aware, you may be receiving an additional refund from Indiana next spring...

Governor Eric Holcomb says an estimated 4.3 million taxpayers will receive a $125 refund after filing their 2021 taxes. Holcomb’s office says it is working with the Indiana General Assembly on legislation to streamline the process and make an additional 910,000 taxpayers eligible for the credit.

The IRS on Friday announced that it will start accepting and processing 2020 tax returns on Friday, Feb. 12. This is later than in most previous years, when tax season has started in January. The IRS says the delay is due to the extra time it needs for programming and testing its systems following the tax law changes made by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (CAA 2021), P.L. 116-260, which was enacted Dec. 27.

The IRS anticipates starting to issue refunds for taxpayers who claim the earned income tax credit and/or additional child tax credit in the first week of March, for taxpayers who file electronically and provide direct deposit information and have no other issues with their returns.
