The end of the year is coming! Be on the lookout for tips and tricks as the tax season starts.
In the meantime, if you use a Tax Professional, know that the IRS has strict rules for us to use due diligence in making sure that clients actually qualify for the Filing Status and credits claimed. Not only are we required to file a questionnaire, we are required to ask follow up questions, document the questions and answers, and retain copies of any supporting documents.
We can be fined over $600 for each return filed that does not follow this procedure to the IRS's satisfaction!
So when preparing, make sure to bring or upload a copy of:
-Social security cards for all members of the household
-A school or medical document noting the address of the child(ren)
-Birth certificates for children
-Receipts or a year end report from any childcare provider noting what is paid for what child and by whom (to claim childcare credits, a social security number or employee ID is necessary from the provider)
-If you are a single parent claiming your child(ren), proof of utility bills, rental agreement, or mortgage in your name, and the ability to prove you pay for food and clothing should you be audited.
Remember, even if you choose to file on your own, you must be able to provide proof of everything on your return, so make sure you have everything above ready in case the IRS asks.
Stay tuned, and contact us for your consultation today! Remote meetings available for all states!
