Why do small business owners need to make defensive planning a strategic part of their financial plan?

I can't say it better than my friend and colleague, Todd Tauzin,-- "No one wants to be in business, have a business partner pass away, to now be in business with their ex-partner's new spouse's attorney."

Taking time to put defensive strategies like Buy- Sell Agreements, Disability Insurance, and Estate Planning in place for when life's surprises hit your business can keep you out of an "ex-partner's new spouse's attorney" type situation.

This Memorial Day, we are pausing to remember what the day truly means.

While we will still gather with family and friends, fire up the grill, and enjoy a beautiful long weekend, we are intentionally finding time to reflect on the deeper purpose of this day: honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.
Freedom isn’t free—and today, we honor those who paid the ultimate price.

I was speaking to a business owner who shared this philosophy:

"Be hard on the process and easy on the people."

This really resonated with me. Having goals and standards that you commit to is important, but so is creating a culture that people want to be a part of.

Small Business Spotlight: Solid Ground Construction 🏡

Continuing with our Small Business Spotlights, I am excited to highlight Solid Ground Construction, a husband-and-wife team dedicated to blending thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and unwavering integrity.

Kyle, who leads all aspects of construction, and Katie, who focuses on Business Development and Design, started Solid Ground Construction with two core passions: creating beautiful, highly functional family homes, and building meaningful relationships with the people they serve. For them, it isn’t just about the end result, but the experience along the way.

While building their business, they’ve learned that the most successful projects are built on more than craftsmanship alone. That’s why they focus on setting a foundation of integrity, transparency, and consistent communication (which they acknowledge the construction industry isn’t necessarily known for…) They have found that when those pieces are in place, the design and construction process not only becomes smoother, but genuinely more enjoyable for everyone.

I really admire the genuine, deep care they have for their customers and the beautiful work they deliver and am inspired again and again by their faith and trust in God.

If you are looking for a team who can deliver a beautifully executed space while providing an experience you can feel confident in and cared for throughout, Solid Ground Construction may be a business worth following.

Small Business Month is a good time to celebrate what you’ve built—but it’s also a good time to think a step ahead.

For many owners, the business is the plan.
It’s the largest asset, the income source, and the future exit strategy all rolled into one.

That works… until it doesn’t.

Because when most of your wealth is tied up inside the business, your options become limited:

• You may feel pressure to sell on someone else’s timeline
• You may need a higher sale price than the market will support
• You may delay stepping away simply because you don’t have another source of liquidity

Building liquidity outside of your business changes that equation.

It creates:
• Flexibility in timing of your exit
• Freedom in how you structure a sale
• Confidence that your future isn’t dependent on a single outcome

This isn’t about pulling back from your business.
It’s about strengthening your position as an owner.

The most resilient exit plans we see aren’t built on a single event—they’re built on options.

If you’re a business owner, it’s worth asking:
👉 “If I decided to step away in the next 3–5 years, what would give me the most flexibility?”

That’s where real planning begins.

Small Business Spotlight: Minnesota Green 🌿

This Small Business Month, I’m excited to highlight Minnesota Green—a custom landscaping and design company with deep roots and a clear vision for the future.

Originally founded in 1977 as a lawn mowing company, Minnesota Green has evolved significantly over the past 49 years. In 2022, Bob Renaud purchased the business from its original owners and has continued building on its legacy, growing it into a company focused on pairing exceptional landscaping with beautiful homes to create stunning spaces both inside and out.

Along the way, Bob has learned what many business owners come to understand: success doesn’t happen alone. It takes a strong team—not just employees, but trusted advisors like accountants, bankers, and financial professionals—to help navigate the complexities of running a business. His advice to others starting out reflects that mindset: stay the course, trust your people, and make informed decisions by recognizing both your strengths and your limits.

For Bob, the best indicator of success is the ability of your employees to be successful. Not only in the work environment, but life itself. If your employees are happy and productive, you've done something right. This will trickle out to your clients and show you represent confidence and quality.

I admire the vision Bob has for Minnesota Green, the respect he has for his team, and the quality of work that they do.

If you’re looking for thoughtful, high-quality landscaping and design, Minnesota Green is a name worth knowing.

Working with business owners, clarity is key.

Having a clear view of not only their vision for the future but their “why” provides clarity for when times get hard and decisions get complex.

Having a clear picture of what worries them allows protections to be put in place to alleviate avoidable risks.

Having a clear vision of where they are going brings clarity to what they should be doing now, next, and never.

Clarity ushers in intention.

Our team recently updated our team photos with our favorite photographer, Laura of Willow and Birch Photography.

And once again she has exceeded every expectation!

In honor of Small Business Month, I want to highlight her as she is extremely gifted at what she does.

She consistently delivers beautiful, high-quality images and brings a level of care and attention to detail that truly sets her apart. Beyond her talent, she’s an exceptional human and someone we’re grateful to call a friend.

If you’re looking to update your team photos, capture a headshot that truly reflects you, or snap family photos, you can reach Laura at [email protected]

Small acts, shared purpose.

Today our team stepped away from our desks and spent time packing snack bags for Solid Ground, a local nonprofit serving families transitioning out of homelessness.

Moments like this are a reminder that “service” isn’t just something we talk about in our values—it’s something we practice. As a team, we’re committed not only to helping our clients plan for an intentional future, but also to showing up for the community around us in tangible ways.

Grateful for a team that leans in, works together, and looks for opportunities to make a difference—both in and out of the office.

If you’re looking for a simple way to give back, this is it: find a need, gather your people, and start small.

Are my investments a financial plan?

Short answer: No.

Long Answer: Your investments are a component of your financial plan, but they are not a plan.

Investments only plan for what could go right. Investments don’t protect against the “what ifs” of life.

Investments without a thorough plan doesn’t provide enough clarity on what “enough” in retirement means to you.

Investments without a comprehensive plan does not provide clarity on how to be most efficient with your resources.

A financial plan includes defining goals, setting direction, developing a strategy, implementing that strategy and sticking to your plan.

Without a fully developed plan, you lack the clarity to make decisions with intention and confidence.

If you’re ready for clarity, we’re here to help.

One of the most often overlooked retirement decisions is how withdrawal timing will affect your plan.

It can affect your taxes, how long your savings lasts, and the lifestyle you can maintain.

A clear, intentional strategy that coordinates cash, guaranteed income, investments, and timing, can turn uncertainty into confidence.

Reach out if you'd like to discuss how this fits into your plan.
