Taxpayers, what you need to know!

Time is running out to claim $1.2 billion in refunds for tax year 2022

Over 1.3 million people across the nation have unclaimed refunds for tax year 2022. Tax professionals should advise clients that the deadline is April 15 to submit tax year 2022 tax returns to claim a refund.

The IRS estimates that approximately $1.2 billion in refunds remain unclaimed for taxpayers who have not filed their Form 1040 federal income tax return for the 2022 tax year.

Under the law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they do not file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

Tax professionals should also remind clients seeking a 2022 tax refund that those clients’ funds may be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2023 and 2024.

2026 tax filing season opens with several free filing options available

The 2026 tax filing season officially kicked off this week, and the IRS is now accepting and processing federal income tax returns for the 2025 tax year.

Taxpayers have several options for filing electronically, with some free options available depending on income level.

Free filing options

IRS Free File offers eligible taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income of $89,000 or less in 2025 access to tax preparation software at no cost. For 2026, there are eight IRS Free File trusted partners.

Each partner sets its own eligibility requirements, which may include age, income, state residency and military status

Some partners also offer free state tax return preparation and filing
IRS Free File Fillable Forms are available to taxpayers who are comfortable preparing and filing their own returns, regardless of income level

MilTax is a free tax resource, offered through the Department of Defense, for eligible members of the military community. It allows for the electronic filing of a federal tax return and up to three state returns for free

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals

For those who choose to use a tax professional to prepare and file their tax returns, the IRS encourages taxpayers to review tips for choosing a tax preparer and how to recognize red flags when choosing a tax professional.

THE IRS is urging Americans to set up a six-digit PIN ahead of the upcoming tax season.

The IRS noted the PIN is a protective measure that can help you keep yourself safe from tax-related identity theft. With the new year approaching, the IRS has released a notice telling Americans to create an identity protection PIN, which “prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN).”

This six-digit number is only known to you and the IRS and can help the IRS verify your identity if you file a tax return either online or by paper.

Taxpayers as well as Tax Professionals news you can use brought to you via AMS Enterprises Income Tax Service & Notary Public.

What is an IP PIN, and Why should you/your client get one?

An IP PIN is a six-digit code that helps protect federal tax returns from being filed fraudulently. If someone tries to file using your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) without the correct IP PIN, their attempt is blocked. This added layer of security ensures that only the taxpayer, or those they share the IP PIN with, can use their information to file.

Not only does an IP PIN help prevent identity theft, but it also ensures a faster, smoother filing process—so you can focus on other aspects of tax season, worry-free.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminds the more than 800,000 paid tax preparers that preparer tax identification numbers must be renewed annually, and the 2026 renewal period is now open.

Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns or claims for refunds for compensation must have a valid PTIN and include it on all returns and claims filed with the IRS. Also, all enrolled agents, regardless of whether they prepare tax returns, must renew their PTINs annually to maintain their active status. PTINs expire on Dec. 31 of the calendar year for which they are issued. All 2025 PTINs will expire on Dec. 31, 2025.

The fee to renew or obtain a PTIN is $18.75 for 2026. The PTIN fee is non-refundable.

How to renew

The IRS encourages tax pros to renew online, which takes less than 15 minutes to complete. A paper option is available, using Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application and Renewal PDF, however, it can take 6 weeks for processing.
