Can business debt become personal? In some cases, yes. If you’re a sole proprietor or a general partner in a partnership, you’re personally liable for business debts. Owners of corporations and limited liability companies are generally protected from personal liability, unless they personally guarantee a loan, commit fraud or fail to keep business and personal finances separate. Payroll taxes are different. The IRS can assess the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty to hold owners, officers or other responsible individuals personally liable for unpaid withheld payroll taxes, regardless of the business structure. This applies even if the business declares bankruptcy. Call us at (631) 547-1040 with questions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how almost everything is done, including how fraud is committed. For example, a scammer might use AI to generate “deepfake” voices or “spoof” caller ID information to impersonate IRS agents. AI also makes it easier for perpetrators to establish robocall networks. (The IRS always stresses that it will contact taxpayers via U.S. mail about any tax issues. It won’t leave urgent voice messages or threaten arrest.) Fraud aside, the IRS warns against relying on AI-generated responses to complex tax questions. Be sure to verify AI answers by reviewing IRS instructions and crunching any numbers yourself. Better yet, call us at (631) 547-1040 for assistance.

Does your business use independent contractors? The reporting requirements for these workers differ from those for W-2 employees. For payments made in 2026, businesses generally must issue Form 1099-NEC, “Nonemployee Compensation,” to contractors paid $2,000 or more (up from $600 for 2025). The higher threshold may reduce your administrative burden because you could have fewer forms to file with the IRS. However, it doesn’t change your recordkeeping, worker classification or backup withholding responsibilities. Contact us at (631) 547-1040 to help ensure you’re prepared for the updated reporting requirements.

Has administrative complexity discouraged your business from offering a 401(k) plan? Take a look at the safe harbor 401(k). The employer contribution obligation generally exempts the plan from nondiscrimination testing and other onerous administrative duties. Plus, this plan enables highly compensated employees to max out their contributions and can help attract and retain workers. Typically, employees are eligible to participate if they're age 21 or older and have at least one year of service. Call us (631) 547-1040 for details.

A temporary federal income tax deduction for interest on qualifying auto loans for 2025 through 2028 was created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The write-off, available even if you don’t itemize, is capped at $10,000 per tax return, subject to income-based phaseouts. It applies only to interest on first-lien loans to buy U.S.-assembled passenger vehicles for personal use. Leased, used and fleet vehicles are excluded. The IRS recently issued proposed regulations that clarify how the deduction works. For example, they address the “personal use” requirement. Contact us for details at (631) 547-1040.

In strategic planning, it can be hard for business owners to step back and evaluate opportunities objectively. An external advisory board can offer fresh, independent perspectives and seasoned guidance, especially when handling high-stakes, complex transactions. A board’s involvement can elevate professionalism, strengthen credibility with stakeholders and support smarter long-term decisions. Contact us at (631) 547-1040 to explore how creating an advisory board, or optimizing your current one, can help your business grow.

Holding real estate within your operating company may lead to unfavorable tax outcomes and increased risk. For example, office or warehouse space owned by a C corporation is generally subject to double taxation when it’s sold. Or, if a customer is injured on company property, other business assets could be at risk. Separating real estate into its own entity, such as a limited liability company or partnership, can help reduce your exposure and provide greater flexibility for long-term planning. Call us at (631) 547-1040 to review your business structure and determine the best fit for your situation.

The IRS has launched a new “Report Fraud” webpage to simplify confidential reporting of suspected tax fraud or scams. It consolidates multiple IRS fraud-reporting options into a single location, allowing taxpayers to report suspected scams, tax evasion or other tax-related misconduct in one place. This is the initial phase; the IRS plans to further streamline fraud reporting by reducing the number of forms, automating processes and adopting modern case‑management tools. We’re here if you have questions. Call us at (631) 547-1040.

Today’s finance and accounting (F&A) teams are under significant pressure. Practical operational improvements can make a real difference. When your F&A team has the right structure and support, they’re more productive, accurate and engaged. Call us at (631) 547-1040 to brainstorm cost-effective ways to strengthen your financial operations.

The IRS issued interim guidance on the new special depreciation allowance for qualified production property under tax legislation signed into law in July of 2025. The guidance defines qualified production property and activities (such as certain manufacturing, chemical production and agricultural production), explains how to determine the allowance, and outlines how and when to elect it. It also addresses depreciation recapture if the property no longer meets the requirements. Eligible taxpayers can deduct up to 100% of the unadjusted basis of qualified production property placed in service after July 4, 2025, and before Jan. 1, 2031. Contact us at (631) 547-1040 if you have questions.
