🚨❄️ STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED – BLIZZARD & COASTAL FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT ❄️🚨
Supervisor Rich Schaffer has declared a State of Emergency for the Town of Babylon in response to an intensifying winter storm.
🚗 ALL VEHICLES MUST BE REMOVED FROM ROADWAYS.
During a State of Emergency, vehicles may be parked on lawns if driveways cannot accommodate them. This is critical so storm equipment operators can ensure vehicle travel lanes are clear.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning from 1 PM Sunday through 6 PM Monday. Forecasts now call for 15 to 20 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 55–60 mph.
A Coastal Flood Warning is also in effect from 10 PM Sunday to 4 AM Monday, with 1½ to 3 feet of flooding possible in vulnerable waterfront areas, along with beach erosion and road closures.
Due to the severity of this storm, whiteout conditions, power outages, coastal flooding, and dangerous travel are expected. Roadways may become impassable, creating hazardous conditions for civilian, emergency, and service vehicles.
❄️ IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
🚫 Travel should be restricted to emergencies only.
🧹 Residents and business owners are responsible for shoveling and clearing sidewalks.
🚒 Please clear snow from in front of fire hydrants so emergency crews have access if needed.
🏡 Keep vehicles away from flood-prone and waterfront areas when possible.
Our Department of Public Works had all equipment fully prepped and ready as of yesterday and crews are prepared to work around the clock as conditions allow. Despite these preparations, extreme weather and coastal impacts may affect operations.
As with all major storms, full cleanup will begin once conditions improve and may take 48 hours or longer.
“Our DPW crews have already put in long hours over the past several weeks, and once again they are ready to step up for our community," Schaffer said. "I’m incredibly proud of their dedication and hard work. We ask residents to please be patient as crews work around the clock to clear our roads as safely and efficiently as possible.”
