The IRS has yet to finish millions of returns from the 2021 tax season. That doesn’t bode well for 2022.

Tax day is Jan. 24: How long will it take to get refund from IRS?

The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers may face a “frustrating” season due to challenges created by the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s tax filing season will begin on Monday, Jan. 24, roughly two weeks earlier than last year. Returns - or requests for extensions with payment – are due Monday, April 18.

IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact services.

Overall, the IRS anticipates most taxpayers will receive their refunds within 21 days of then they file electronically if they choose direct deposit and there are no issues with their tax return. Filing a paper return will result in delays.

Another source of a possible delay is refunds that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit. A federal law designed to limit identity theft prevents the IRS from issuing those refunds before mid-February, even if they were filed on Jan. 24.

2020 has been a crazy year, see the link for some important reminders. To summarize:

Unemployment:

Probably one of the biggest changes many taxpayers will have to deal with on their taxes, likely for the first time. Many local and State Departments have already begun sending out 1099-G forms. The form shows a record of how much money you got, which needs to be reported to the IRS.

Home Office Deduction:

Working from home? The law changed a couple of years ago and the deduction for employees no longer exist! If you are a contractor (1099), options do exist.

Stimulus Checks:

Your first payment should have been followed by a letter with form 1044 from the official government which, similarly to the 1099-G, explains the benefit and how much you received. If you did not get a second stimulus payment but should be eligible, you may have to request it on your taxes, by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit.

Delayed Timeline:

Like I mentioned in a previous post, the IRS has already announced filing season will start on February 12th delaying refunds as well...

Your taxes might be a rollercoaster you'll have to tackle this year, thanks to COVID-19's economic impact on 2020. If you lost a job, turned to gig work, or even got unemployment benefits, you may have to navigate landmines you're not used to.

2021 Tax Filing Season Will Start on Feb. 12, 2021

The Feb. 12 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to do additional programming and testing of IRS systems following the Dec. 27 tax law changes. These changes ensure that eligible people will receive any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2020 tax return.

To speed refunds during the pandemic, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit as soon as they have the information they need. People can begin filing their tax returns immediately, however, the IRS will not begin processing until Feb. 12.

Also note, under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot issue a refund involving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The law provides additional time to help the IRS stop fraudulent refunds. The IRS anticipates a first week of March refund for many EITC and ACTC taxpayers if they file electronically with direct deposit.
