The announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. You will have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file your 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. Don’t forget that IRS.gov has online tools and resources you can use before, during and after filing your federal tax return. What to know about the shutdown and taxes:
Yes the government is shutdown down. The IRS plans to stay open for 5 days. If the shutdown last longer then that, they will also shut down.
No there is no extra extension! Deadline remains Oct 15th. Even if they are shut down, the deadline will still exist. Taxes and payments can still be made during the shutdown online and by mail. Refunds will be delayed while shut down.
No they will not be there to take calls after 5 days!
Don't make the mistake of not filing before the deadline. Penalties will still be assessed even if they are shut down.
