EXPECT DELAYS FOR REFUNDS
Taxpayers should brace for delays in refunds, as the agency recovers from staff losses and a long government shutdown last fall and a potential second shutdown soon.
The backlog for processing tax returns has jumped 129% to levels higher than inventories before the pandemic, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a report released Tuesday. This pileup could impede the IRS's ability to process tax returns for the 2026 filing season, which started Monday.

TAX SEASON NEWS -

Tax filing season in the US will begin Jan. 26, the IRS said Thursday, starting on time after a year of turmoil with an exodus of workers and al government shutdown.
A timely start is a positive early sign, though another funding lapse remains a threat as the agency's current budget expires Jan. 30—a few days into the season. Taxpayers will have until April 15 to file.
