Tax time is upon us again...

If you received the third stimulus payment (also known as EIP3) or any Child Tax Credit payments between July and December of 2021, you should keep an eye out for Letter 6475 or Letter 6419 from the IRS.

Letter 6475 lists the amount of your third stimulus payment delivered by the IRS in 2021. The letter includes information on any plus-up payments, too.

Letter 6419 lists how much of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) you received in advance in 2021 and how many qualifying children those payments were based on.

Filing season reminder:
An extension to file is not an extension to pay taxes

For most individual taxpayers the tax filing and payment deadline was postponed to May 17. Those who need more time to file beyond the postponed date, can request an extension to file.

Taxpayers must request an extension to file by May 17, or they may face a failure to file penalty. This extension gives them until October 15 to file their tax return. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. Taxes must be paid by May 17 to avoid penalties and interest on the amount owed after that date.

How to request an extension to file

To get an extension to file, the IRS urges taxpayers to do one of the following:

File Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or by using Free File on IRS.gov.
Submit an electronic payment with Direct Pay, Electronic Federal Tax Payment System or by debit, credit card or digital wallet and select Form 4868 or extension as the payment type.

An automatic extension of time to file will process when taxpayers pay all or part of their taxes electronically by the Monday, May 17 due date.

Some taxpayers may have extra time to file their tax returns and pay any taxes due. This includes some disaster victims, taxpayers living overseas, including members of the military, and eligible support personnel serving in combat zones.

πŸ‘€ 🌐 University students and staff should be aware of IRS impersonation email scam πŸ‘€πŸŒ

People should be aware of an ongoing IRS-impersonation scam that appears to target educational institutions, including students and staff who have .edu email addresses. The suspect emails display the IRS logo and use various subject lines, such as Tax Refund Payment or Recalculation of your tax refund payment. It asks people to click a link and submit a form to claim their refund.

The scam website requests taxpayers provide their:

Social Security number
First name
Last name
Date of birth
Prior year annual gross income
Driver's license number
Current address
City
State/U.S. territory
ZIP code/postal code
Electronic filing PIN
Taxpayers who believe they have a pending refund can easily check on its status using the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov.

Here are a few things people can do if they believe they are a target of the scam:

Report the scam: People who receive this scam email should not click on the link in the email and report it to the IRS. For security reasons, they should save the email using save as and then send that attachment to [email protected] or forward the email as an attachment to [email protected].

Get an Identity Protection PIN: Taxpayers who believe they may have provided identity thieves with their personal information should consider immediately obtaining an Identity Protection PIN. This is a voluntary opt-in program. An IP PIN is a six-digit number that helps prevent identity thieves from filing fraudulent tax returns in the victim's name.

Report identity theft: Taxpayers who attempt to e-file their tax return and find it rejected because a return with their SSN has been filed should file a Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit to report themselves as a possible identity theft victim. See Identity Theft Central to learn about the signs of identity theft and actions to take.
